Good morning to all of you gardeners. I cant believe that January is half over! I am so ready for March to get here. Down here in my area of Mississippi we got up to 60 F yesterday and the forecast is for highs in the high 50s and 60s for the next week. I have not ordered my seeds yet. I had planned to wait until the end of January to place my orders. This morning I read a thread on FR that indicated there was a shortage of vegetable seeds and that some seed sellers have run out. Are any of you having a problem ordering and receiving your seeds?
Weekly Gardening Thread
I hope all of you will stop by.
This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.
If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.
Morning. We are turning the bed with compost and planting winter rye this afternoon. The horrible cold weather just killed any chance of more product out of the bed.
Looking forward to spring as well with the increased knowledge we have gained over the year. I made lots of mistakes and hope to pare back my ambitions this year and concentrate on what works and produces consistent food stock.
Gonna have to get some aussie gardeners on the list.
Got most of my seed already, just one more small order still ‘in transit’. Tomatoes, peppers, onions, cabbage, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower seedlings on their way...
The only news from the western part of SD is the snow and ice remaining from the last blizzard despite temps of ten degrees above normal, and wondering when the next one will be. We are fast approaching the real blizzard season. Oh, and my grown from acorn oak is still thriving, with the second set of leaves now visible but not leaves yet. If only I could sprout my chestnuts that consistently avoid doing what they are made to do.
Do you know any?
I don’t know about the seed shortage first hand, I hear about, but I KNOW there is no shortage of seed CATALOGS. I probably have recd 2 dozen already and some are coming in as multiples.
It is even tooo early for me. the Big bear is not even close to comingout of hibernation.
I just wanted to invite you to check out the weekly gardening thread. We get pretty bored in the northern hemisphere this time of year and figure we could use some Aussies to tell us how the gardening goes.
Be sure to invite others you think may be interested.
All seeds arrived a few days after ordering in late Dec. I had heard of a possible shortage, so I didnt waste any time getting mine ordered.
Of all the Aussies I know, they are all drinkers and not planters. lol
I spent 6 months as crewman on one of their destroyers as an international “crossdeck” program with the USN back when Mody dick was a guppy. A great ship, officers and men were super, all professionals. But oh my ..... every single one of them could drink you under the table, and then pull you back up and go several more rounds.
Survival of the fittest.
Yes, there are seed banks around the world and many in the USA, too.
There isnt a shortage of seeds. I work for a seed company. Granted, some years there are shortages of a particular VARIETY, but were not going to run out of seed as long as there are people (like me) who are making money at it.
As far as SAVING seed, you need to grow open-or-self-pollinating varieties, usually called Heirloom Seed. You also need isolation cages or acres and acres of land between varieties so you dont get cross-pollinization.
Hybridized seeds will not produce TRUE, but they still will produce...either the male or female cross of the plant the seed came from in the first place.
See sales last year were up 30%. I predict more of the same this year...and yes, it was the worst growing season Ive seen in 20 years...but people were still able to produce some of their food around here.
Dont panic. Stock up if thats where you want your dollars to sit, but theres no need to panic.
I am giddy. I planted tomato, and pepper seeds. In six packs of course. I planted arugula and cilantro. My onions and garlic are up. Working on my compost pile. As I said, I am giddy.
Good idea!
Beginning gardener here.
I really want to start composting - any good hints, web links.
I do have one major draw-back in my backyard, a black walnut tree!! I don’t know how that could effect a compost heap. I don’t want any leaves/seeds from that tree in my compost.
Put in 4 small raised beds last year with mixed success. At least I got some tomatoes & tons of basil and oregano. But it was just too shallow for any root crops. Thinking about doubling the depth this year.
