HAT CREEK, CALIF. -- The wide dishes, 20 feet across and raised high on their pedestals, creaked and groaned as the winds from an approaching snowstorm pushed into this highland valley. Forty-two in all, the radio telescopes laid out in view of some of California's tallest mountains look otherworldly, and now their sounds conjured up visions of deep-space denizens as well.

What! Obama hasn't rang their bell? They need to go extra-terrestrial for that savior to the world?

No worries. We proved 2000 years ago that saviors can grow right here thank you very much. And that Savior's birthday is being celebrated this Christmas.

No need to look to world leaders or extra-terrestrial beings like you see in the movies. Bring Jesus Christ into your hearts this Christmas Day.

Good grief.

I don't think anyone seriously is looking for “saviors” in learning if extraterrestrial intelligence exists.

Simply searching for an answer to a question humans have had since we first looked to the stars and realized there were nearly limitless possibilities for someone else out there.

And only really in very recent history have we had the tech to make serious attempts to do so. Is there really need to preach over a SETI thread?

I was hoping to take this post onto a philosophical- religious turn. To put it in Carl Sagan's words: "The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is a search for who we are. Exobiology is not satisfied with the search for a few one celled lifeforms. It is the search for intelligence. Hence, we are trying to make contact with them:

I’d be more worried about intercepting the TV transmissions from another culture as they were being invaded by another more malevolent alien species, time to turn Earth into a bunker.
