The "Arbeit macht frei" sign stolen from Auschwitz in southern Poland has been found in the north and five men have been arrested, police say. They said the metal sign from the main gate, which symbolises for many the atrocities of Nazi Germany, had been cut into three pieces. A major search was launched after the sign was stolen before dawn on Friday. Its theft, the motive for which was not being reported, caused outrage in Israel and among Polish politicians. Five men in their 20s or 30s were detained and were being taken to Krakow for questioning, a police spokeswoman said. More than a million people - 90% of them Jews - were murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz during World War II......

I was expecting that the sign would re-appear over the White House gate or something.
I have passed under that sign - but not to my death...only as a tourist
That was my 1st thought, too. That, or over at that empty Montana prison.

You get the feeling even Tiger Woods wouldn't trade places with those five guys right now. Maybe it's just being a dumb American or whatever, but "Krakow" and well, the history of the place in general, doesn't sound like a place where you'd want to be held in custody at.
This tells me that it wasn't stolen by some sociopathic collector, because he would want the sign in its original form.
It might have been stolen by an anti-Jewish group that didn't care about the historic nature of the sign, but wanted it for the propaganda value of having it.
Now what group of people would want that?
