There have been other strange color lighting decisions from the Empire State Building recently. A few weeks ago, it was lit green for al-Quds day, an Islamic holiday.

The suspicion here is that you'll find some leftists in key positions in the company that manages the building. Or perhaps the NYC government has some input into these lighting decisions. That's the only logical way to explain it.
