Sometime on Saturday, maybe the wind will suddenly whip up. Maybe the sky will part. And, maybe fantastical things will happen up on College Hill in Providence.

Brown University will welcome its freshman class. And it just might welcome a wizard, or at least a wannabe: Emma Watson, the 19-year-old British actress who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies.

"This was a small wardrobe malfunction that happens," Watson, 19, giggled to Letterman while holding her head in her hands. "I actually don't remember it happening."

There was one saving grace though. "At least I'm wearing underwear!" she joked as the audience laughed.

I’m no fan of uber-PC Brown, but good for her for doing this - she’s made millions from HP and could easily have turned into a waste case (hello Lindsay Lohan). She comes across as a very poised young woman in interviews.

Best wishes for a successful for years. Providence used to be an absolute pit (maybe still is), and the climate ... *shudder*.

“Providence used to be an absolute pit “

No. Providence is beautiful now. Waterplace Park in the middle of the city is surrounded by some of the best restaurants anywhere. Within walking distance is Federal Hill with even more fabulous restaurants. The breads and pastries at the little Italian bakeries are second rate to none. During the summer and into the early fall the little outdoor cafes are filled with people sipping wine or expresso. I miss Providence.

I miss Providence, too. I dropped by to campaign for Laffey for Senate and they sent me to Mount Pleasant High for the day. (palm cards and sign waving)

Well, good! We moved from Rhode Island in 1978, and I haven’t been there since. There are a number of cities that have really improved in that time.
