Charges $70 for new OS, warns existing customers not to upgrade older clones
Computerworld - Mac clone maker Psystar isn't waiting for a federal judge to give it the green light to sell systems with Apple's new Snow Leopard operating system, according to the company's Web site.
"We support Snow Leopard on all new Psystar machines and we're already taking orders for computers with the latest OS from Apple [that] will begin to ship next week," said Psystar in an anonymous posting on its company blog Monday.
Psystar's order page lists Snow Leopard as a $69.99 optional upgrade from the default Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard. The Snow Leopard upgrade, however, also includes a copy of Apple's iLife and iWork creative and productivity suites.
But at the same time, the Florida-based maker of Mac clones warned existing customers not to try upgrading their generic Intel-based computers to Snow Leopard on their own. Doing so, said Psystar "may cause harm to your computer."
The company failed to say why users shouldn't upgrade to Snow Leopard, or provide any guidance on how, or even whether, specific systems can be updated to Mac OS X 10.6. "We will be releasing information on upgrading your Psystar computer to OS X Snow Leopard soon," said the blog. "The ability to do so may depend on when your system was purchased, and upgrade costs may vary."

Psystar psycho Snow Leopard ping!
It's $29.99 from Apple / Amazon / MaMall, etc. But without the iLife stuff.
Yep, I picked up a copy on Saturday and upgraded Sunday. It, so far, is OK. I have had problems with mail, and a couple of other minor issues, but so far so good. However, I have not seen (haven’t looked hard) much difference.

I trust that installing 10.6 doesn't uninstall iLife & iWork . . .
This is a reason why I don’t like a lawsuit.
If you buy a Mac, it works. Apple tells you exactly what machines the new OS works on, and it’s 100% supported. Apparently not quite so with Psystar, which although they apparently give a cheaper price, they also give a much worse experience to the consumer.
Let the market get rid of these guys.

Ars Technica has a detailed report on the changes.
If you're not a developer, the changes aren't that big (that's why it's only $29). If you are a developer, they're pretty huge.
From the experience of some of my friends, you upgrade to Snow Leopard on your real Mac at your own peril. The comment was, “That’s what I get for upgrading to an x.0 release.”
Upgrading my real MAC was easy. Although, it took almost an hour, the upgrade went as expected. I have encountered a couple minor problems, but otherwise it is OK.
It doesn’t. I’ve upgraded my current machine and have both packages.

Buy a cheap kludge, live with the cheap kludge consequences...
Can I buy that upgrade alone from Psystar? That sounds like the $170 box set for only $70. I'll take it if I don't have to buy their crappy hardware along with it.
Prolly will work just fine. Why wouldn't it? Cojones.... if nothing else those Psystar boys have a boatload of chutzpah
And without whatever hacks Psystar applies to get it to run on their boxen.
Your friends running clones? I have 4 Macs all upgraded last Friday, none with a hiccup.
Huh?
I upgraded, didn’t even “backup” my stuff, and things are running flawlessly. Wonder why your “friends” are having so much trouble?
It looks like some judge will have to whack their wiener pretty hard with a contempt of court citation among other things. They are very defiant for some reason I don’t yet see.
I can’t believe..oh wait. Yes I can.
