Madonna booed in Bucharest for defending Gypsies

BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a stage with Madonna. Then the pop star condemned widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies — and the cheers gave way to jeers.

The sharp mood change that swept the crowd of 60,000, who had packed a park for Wednesday night's concert, underscores how prejudice against Gypsies remains deeply entrenched across Eastern Europe.

Despite long-standing efforts to stamp out rampant bias, human rights advocates say Roma probably suffer more humiliation and endure more discrimination than any other people group on the continent.

Sometimes, it can be deadly: In neighboring Hungary, six Roma have been killed and several wounded in a recent series of apparently racially motivated attacks targeting small countryside villages predominantly settled by Gypsies.

"There is generally widespread resentment against Gypsies in Eastern Europe. They have historically been the underdog," Radu Motoc, an official with the Soros Foundation Romania, said Thursday.

Well they are kind of offensive in their approach to begging.
I usually give to almost anyone but the gypsy children made me want to push them away physically.

Aren’t Gypsies anarchists?

Dear old (and I do mean old) Madge...trying sooo hard to stay ‘relevant.’

I know very little of the Gypsie/Roma struggles and/or prejudices. Suffice to say...quoting the great social arbitor of our time, Homer Simpson, ‘Celebrities, is there nothing they don’t know?’

She likes the concept, but doesn’t have to live with them. There’s a fine line between abusive prejudice of the majority and rational reaction to a foreign, somewhat predatory culture.

“Radu Motoc, an official with the Soros Foundation Romania, said Thursday.”

Laughable source IMO. Gypsies are notorious thieves, and Societal nuisances. They thrive on the dark side. I take no pity upon them.

Maybe it underscores how people who paid twelve times too much to hear Madonna's greatest hits of the late 80s don't want to waste a dime of their time listening to her opinions on Romania's historic ethnic strife.

Just visit Rome in the early summer some time. The gypsies are a plague, especially on public transit. They train all their children to be skilled pickpockets. You can spot the little vermin because each carries a towel over its arm, the better to hide its other hand while picking your pocket. The alleged “bias” against them is just as reasonable as a “bias” against flea infested plague rats.

Wow. I mean just... WOW! at some of these replies.

Gypsies are notorious thieves, and Societal nuisances. They thrive on the dark side. I take no pity upon them.

Let's see. If somebody had said "Jews are notorious thieves, and Societal nuisances. They thrive on the dark side. I take no pity upon them." it wouldn't have been acceptable.

I know... Maybe if they had said "Italians are notorious thieves, and Societal nuisances. They thrive on the dark side. I take no pity upon them.".... no ... still not good. What would make this appropriate. Hmmmmmmm.

More Roma were killed by percentage of ethnic group by the Nazis than Jews.

I’ve heard that they ‘acquire’ mannequins, dressmaker’s forms, etc. along with cheap (or stolen) old used pants and spend hour upon hour with a razor knife, perfecting their skills at slicing the pocket stitching so that they can do it almost instantaneously and without the victim feeling a thing.

You’re walking along, brush up against someone and then a couple of city blocks later you notice that half of your pants pocket is flapping in the breeze and your wallet is gone.

And pointing out or objectng to this is being redefined as ‘racism’.

Gypsies are a race?

Yep. The Roma ... sometimes called Romani. Which should not be confused with the Romanians. Not everybody referred to as gypsies are actually gypsies/Roma. I know Wikipedia is hardly authoriatative but it's an easy point to start... here.

The degree of accuracy of the three statements you mention might be calculated by accurately determining what percentage of Jews, Gypsies and Italians actually are “notorious thieves, and Societal nuisances.”

Certainly any such statement is never true of all members of a group, but as the percentage for which it is accurate increases, it becomes progressively more true as a general statement.

Your comment reminds me somewhat of the liberal shock when waitstaff (including black waitstaff) are resistant to serving black groups because of the “stereotype” that blacks are cheap tippers. No research project could be simpler than determining whether blacks (as a group) do indeed tend to stiff waiters, but somehow liberals are utterly uninterested in doing this basic research.

IOW, some stereotypes are quite accurate in the generality, although often unfair to particular members of a given group.
