I don’t use the restore point...eats up mem and hd space,
besides, if the restore point includes a timed released virus you are stuck.

Yeah, that's frustrating. You might find a potential solution on the google search I linked. Just remember, if you are having a computer problem, at least 1,000 other people have it as well, and probably 200 of them started a thread about it. The key is figuring out the phrases they used to describe the problem. Get that right, and you'll find some threads. And on at least a few of those threads, someone will have proposed a successful resolution to the problem.

In other words, the internet rocks. My machine is now almost five years old because I was able to find threads that described how to solve my crash issues.

"I don’t use the restore point...eats up mem and hd space, besides, if the restore point includes a timed released virus you are stuck." I used to think that way, but RAM and hard drives are cheap. You can remove virus, delete system restore points, and start a new restore point.

This is exactly my approach to using Altavista (and Google) to find the solutions to lots of different problems, not just computer problems. You have articulated this very well.

> be sure to make use of “restore points”

Yep. I ran Healthcheck,
okay. Set a restore point.
Installed the updates

without worrying.
But on my HP laptop
the updates work fine.

I use to write software for 911 call centers. Almost every time Microsoft released a new Windows Service Pack we had to rewrite the software. There’s a limit to how much testing you can do on a software version to make it run. There is an infinite number of computer/software configurations out there and the developers can only test so many. I’m glad I don’t do that anymore. It will make you old before your time.

Mine crashed and the Vista image is corrupted, too. MS is in a HEAP of trouble because I just got through talking to my neighbor and 5 of us on this block ALONE have dead computers after this last update...

Luckily, my daughter’s computer does NOT have automatic updates on, and is still working...

I am TICKED! Hubby went out and purchased a new HD for me to reinstall Vista on, and now my installation disc keeps hanging! I’m >< this close to saying ADIOS MS and going to Linux...

BUT, all I have to say is that MS had better start sending all of us whose computers were screwed up FREE HARD DRIVES (mine was 500 GB), or they will be facing probably the biggest class-action lawsuit in history...

Doesn’t work when it won’t even boot — spent an HOUR online with MS tech support yesterday. 5 people on my block ALONE had their hard drives corrupted with this update. Restore doesn’t work when the drive is FRIED.

Wish I would’ve known that it wasn’t me before I spent money on a new hard drive. The guy at tech could’ve at least told me it was their fault. The email follow-up they sent told me that if I take my HD to a tech shop and they confirm it was MS’s fault they will do “something”. What that “something” is God only knows...

MS screwed up BIG TIME...

Fatima — which error code are you getting? You’re lucky you got to system restore. Mine wouldn’t even boot from my CD! My whole “Vista Image” is now corrupted on that drive.

I suggest getting in touch with MS tech support through email or chat so they at least have a record of the problem with your computer.

My whole system crashed. Blue screen of death. Won’t even start in safe mode.

It’s so bad that I have to type this post on a vintage Smith Corona typewriter. Do you have any idea how hard it was to adapt this thing to a wireless router?

LOL... Thanks for giving me a laugh! First one I’ve had in a few hours!

Any suggestions on a BETTER OS??? I think I’m DONE with MS now.

System restore did the job just fine.

The Geek Squad gig was a last resort, cuz I didn’t want him to drive home for me or his older (geek) brother to have to fix it. As it turned out, the Geek Squad rep started the System Restore program and 8 minutes later it was all good.

My son was the third person in the store that day with a dead 64 bit Vista system.

If you have a HP Pavillion dv Series laptop, the problem may have been caused by Windows Update KB973879. We had dozens of laptops in our university technical support center tonight with blue screens caused by this update.

We wrote a guide to fixing the problem, I hope this can be of some help: http://bit.ly/FLXoP

“64 bit on an HP notebook duo core 2 quad etc etc”

I bought an HP laptop, 64-bit, Turion Pavillion with Home Vista Premium. Talk about buyer’s remorse!! I wanted the fast processor to run Adobe PhotoShop, but that program won’t run on the 64-bit system and Adobe has no plans to provide a fix, or support it in any way. Our anti-virus software through Time-Warner won’t run on a 64-bit system so I had to get something else. Best Buy wouldn’t take it back or exchange it since there’s technically nothing “wrong” with it. It does make an interesting door stop. I have the “auto update” feature turned off.

And I’m always fearful with MS auto updates. When I updated my XP system with Service Pack 3 months ago, the system crashed. Had to re-image to virgin state factory settings and am sticking with SP 2. Has never worked well since. Microsoft is like the Great And Mighty Oz. You may not approach them.

OK; I’m done.
