A College Dream Ends Too Soon
I worked hard to get into Berkeley and I worked even harder when I got there. But when my funds ran out, I had to leave.

Obama’s fault.
boo hoo. don’t they have a “free” college in Mexico?
Yeah. You bet. It’s like all the Americans that sneak across the border to get medical treatment and free dialysis, and that sneak across the border every day to go to those terrific schools in old Mexico.
tough noogies ping
Reminds me of that great line in Everything you Know is Wrong by Firesign Theater: “And how is your lovely boy, Bunny?” “Oh, he’s in Mexico for a few weeks in medical school, Bob.”
The kid apparently has better academic aptitude than 99% of the American kids his age.
BFD.
WHat’s your point?
Eh, I’m sort of conflicted about this situation (and those like it). On the one hand, I strongly oppose in-state tuition (or any sort of federal/state-backed financial aid) for illegals, so I agree that she shouldn’t be at Berkeley if she can’t pay for it. On the other hand, this kid was 6 months old when her parents crossed the border, so I do feel badly for her. Still, I agree with the outcome...
Someone should tell that kid about the New GI Bill. Give 4 years to the military and you can go to Berkely for free, books included with 1500 a month living expenses.
Hopefully, with his Newsweek piece, Mr. Gonzalez will find private donors that would be willing to contribute to his Berkeley education fund so that he can pursue the education that he has worked towards.
From what he has written, it appears that he is the type of immigrant we need in this country and his achievement is further concrete evidence that academia does not need to be corrupted by affirmative action.
With this example, conservatives can point to Mr. Gonzalez when liberals demand affirmative action for minorities and their access to higher education. He has proven himself to be an American success story by competing against American students and earning his way into a great university.
I don't believe her for one second! BTW, did Newsweek check out her story before they published it?! Is Newsweek harboring an ILLEGAL?!
forcing me to leave that very special school. I am back home now and attending community college
What community college is she attending on TAXPAYER'S MONEY and still COMPLAINING ABOUT IT?!!!
A freshman slot that could have been better used by a legal resident....
hh
She attended school (K-12 plus college), rented a room, and got a job as an illegeal. All those activities should require SSN verification and legal status. It should be against the law for the school administrators, landlords, and employeers to have anything to do with her. She should have been deported as a young child.
If she lied about her legal status and SSN, she should be in jail. She should be deported.
Perhaps, but I am opposed to Affirmative Action that permits a less academically qualified student into a university.
Then go home, ILLEGAL!
We are tired of footing the bill for you too.
Feel bad. You took up a place that belonged to a LEGAL citizen. Go home. Get legal.
Yes, in order to get a job one must have a SSN but not to attend K-12, or to rent a room.
And even in the Great State of Texas, Illegals pay in-state tuition to attend our colleges.
Does the kid speak English or ESL?
With lowering standards I'm not surprised ... I guarantee you she couldn't stand up to some LEGAL kids that have English as their first language. I suppose she made the ILLEGAL "quota: or was it the "gender" and ethcnity "quota". Berkley still has QUOTAS and they screen OUT the cream of the crop that is LEGAL, WHITE or ASIAN. The idea that we need ILLEGALS here and need to pay their way to better our young people is revolting and insulting.
