Chiefs QB Cassel signs six-year contract worth over $60 million
NFL.com Wire Reports
The Kansas City Chiefs announced Tuesday that they have signed quarterback Matt Cassel to a multiyear contract.
The Chiefs didn't disclose terms of the deal, but NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, citing a league source, reports that Cassel received a six-year contract worth over $60 million, with $28 million guaranteed. The deal is worth $40.5 million over the first three years, which puts Cassel in the upper echelon of contracts. According to the source, Cassel will earn $15 million in 2009, in accordance with the franchise tender he originally signed with the New England Patriots before he was traded to the Chiefs this offseason.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement released by the team. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who also came to Kansas City from New England this offseason, echoed Hunt's sentiments in the statement: "We are happy toannounce that the Chiefs and Matt have entered into a multi-year commitment. Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community. His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."
The Chiefs obtained Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel from the Patriots for a second-round pick in last April's NFL Draft. Cassel led the Patriots to an 11-5 record last year after taking over for Tom Brady, who sustained a season-ending knee injury during the opening game against the Chiefs.
In 15 starts, Cassel, originally a seventh-round pick by the Patriots in the 2005 draft, completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
Ah, well. Brady’s back!
Good for him, and I wish him all the luck in the world, unless his opponent is the New England Patriots! It took a serious Brady injury last season for this to eventually happen to Matt.
I would have liked to see him perform without Randy Moss, Wes Welker first. But hey. At least you know he won’t be shooting himself in the leg at a nightclub.
Considering our offensive line it’s probably a good thing for Cassel that so much of it is guaranteed.
The Pats sure know how to find those QB’s in the sixth and seventh rounds. :)
Does he have anybody to throw to in KC?
Good thing he's got some mobility. He's going to need it.
Low volume ping list
FReepmail me to be on, or off, this list.
The Chefs finally actually signed a starting quarterback.
Hope the front line can keep him healthy.
Yeah Dwayne Bowe is a pretty good target.
But did the KC Chiefs clear this with the Federal Czar who is supposed to be in charge of compensation. We can't have people making too much money in this time of "recession." Everyone must be equally poor according to the Marxist Obama MisAdministration.
Big gamble on their part. But then I guess they don’t have a whole lot of options right now.
Obama cut the salaries of bank mnagers, why doesnt he cut the salaries of football players.?
Be careful KC remember Tony Romo.
and I’m a Cowboy fan.
Frankly, I think they’re completely out of their gourds. There’s no way he’s worth that kind of contract. Yes, he had one great season, but he was pretty spotty in his few appearances before that. Yeah, maybe that season wasn’t a fluke, and maybe his success wasn’t a result of playing on an offense as well-manned and -coached as the Patriots’, but do they really want to bet $60 million on that?
The entire “Patriots brain trust” is brilliant. I loved how they increased all of their draft picks in this years draft.
I think Clark Hunt and the Chiefs can afford it.
I am reminded of the early sixties, just after Lamar Hunt moved the chiefs to Kansas City and was reported as loosing a half a million during that year. The Kansas City reporters went scrambling to his dad, old H. L. Hunt and asked him about this terrible finacial loss. H. L. responded, "Well at that rate he can only have a loss like that for another fifty-five years."
Remember he wasn't in all the crazy speculation his brother Bunker and the other brother engaged in and so his part of the Hunt family fortune has been growing all these forty five years to pass on to Clark and the other family memebers.
I realize that salary caps play a part in monster contracts but there are was they defer income and other strategies that help.
