I went to Wimbledon in 1978. I saw Ille Nastase play and I saw Jimmy Connors play and I saw Chris Evert in the stands. Its neat the way it works out this year the womens final will be on the 4th of July.

Pull forward post on another FR thread:

. . . . . Wimbledon starts next Monday. Better half is a great tennis player. I'm only salty on a good day. She lets me win on occasion for "humanitarian purposes". I have to cheer on "my girls" the next two weeks, Maria Sharapova and Dominika Cibulkova. I hope they play each other again like at the French Open. It was funny when they met at the net after Dominika won. Maria is 11 inches taller than she is. Dom may be short but. . . well the photos can do the talking. - - Video, 06.19.09 Miami Herald: Former Wimbledon champ Maria Sharapova took a turn at modeling in a London storefront this week as she prepares for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. ~ FlA

After an incredible string of wins at the 2009 French Open, Maria Sharapova(top) lost to
Dominika Cibulková(bottom), 6–0, 6–2, in the Women's Singles Quarterfinal.

Alas, thanks to the new covered (and lighted!) Centre Court, the type of long delays like we had last year in the men's final will never happen again. And there are plans to eventually put a similar cover and lighting system over Court Number 1, too.

In short, we could have games that last as late as 3 pm PDT/6 pm EDT during the tournament.

WIMBLEDON DAY ONE RESULTS

Featured Article: Federer Breezes as Play Opens at Wimbledon
- - Thirty-four countries in the men's singles draw are fielding 128 contenders, with Spain, France and the United States leading the field with 14 competitors each. For the Ladies Singles, 37 nations are represented with Russia leading the way with 16 entries, followed by France with 11 and the Czech Republic with eight. Being first day of the Championships, Wimbledon is accustomed to the fixation on two or three topics to get the tournament in motion. Last year it was the specter of match rigging and the price of strawberries. This year it's the shock withdrawal by defending champion Nadal, female grunting on court, and of course the new centre court roof.

Thx for the ping,, I'm already having stanley cup playoffs withdrawals,, no good sports on the tube last weekend,, boring golf, baseball, nascar road course race, and hubbies hunting shows babble. The tennis looks fun.

TAB add Andy Roddick to your watch list. He lives in Austin Texas. Us Texans have to stick together.

Have to cheer on "my girls" the next two weeks, Maria Sharapova and Dominika Cibulkova.

You should not be worried about those women with what you have hanging on your arm buster. When hubby & I met you all for the first time at the NHRA Spring Nationals I told him twice to stop dragging his tongue on the asphalt when we were walking the pits with you two and friends. If I may ask where did you find your gf,, she is gorgeous,, I really liked getting to know her.

Tell your D I loved the festival videos,, took a while to download but worth it,, hope she finds ZZ. Ciao

Maria Sharapova Edged Out in Thriller
BBC Sport at Wimbledon: Maria Sharapova fell to a second round defeat, losing 6-2 3-6 6-4 to unseeded Gisela Dulko.

The crowd gave Dulko a standing ovation as she celebrated reaching the third round at Wimbledon for the fourth time in her career. Afterwards the 24-year-old told BBC Sport: "That was the biggest win of my career. It has come in the most important tournament for me and to beat Maria who is a past champion here is a great day for me. "I just didn't play very good in one game and knew the risk with these kind of players that they go through the match very quickly. She took her chance and I didn't play very well in the second set "I was really nervous at the end and really wanted to finish there and not go to 5-5. "The crowd was fantastic with me and I am really thankful and hope they will be there for the next match."

Sharapova was philosophical, saying: "It was unfortunate the timing of this being only my fourth tournament since the injury but that is just the way it is. "Just being here is a wonderful accomplishment and I had the pleasure of playing on Centre Court again. "I enjoy every single minute of this event. The losses are tough, more here than at any other tournament. "It is tough to put the injury out of your mind completely."

My two picks (Roger Federer and Venus Williams) are still going good.

This tournament, I was most impressed with the emergence of Sabine Lisincki. It was also cool seeing a young American, Melanie Oudin, make an impact.

On the flip-side, I was most annoyed with Victoria Azarenka. A very poor sportsman with loud shreaking (see her fourth round match with Nadia Petrova). Good to see Serena mop the floor with her in the Quarters.

Happy to see Tommy Haas finally make it into the Semi-finals. And to see Elena Dementieva play perhaps her best match ever and almost defeating Serana. What a match!
