A little off topic but....why is a 15 year old still in the 8th grade? Shouldn’t they be a sophomore in High School?

Likely held back a grade or two. I was 3 months short of 15 when I left the 8th grade (but I was held back a year due to illness and absences).

They are from Cuba - maybe an ESL issue?

It says the mother is an immigrant from Cuba. Maybe the son was already in school in Cuba and wasn’t up to grade level when they moved here. I had a friend move to America from Jamaica. When he got here the school said that he was two grades behind where he should have been according to his age. He graduated at 20.

Most 15 year-olds would be in the ninth grade this time of year. The kid's probably one year behind his age group, and it says the boy's mother migrated from Cuba, but doesn't say when.
