This link leads to an amazing Al-Jezeera interview with author Anwar Malek who asserts that Arab society has failed by every measure (militarily, economicaly, moraly etc.). The author vigorously disputes another guest on the show by arguing thatArabs do not have a single military victory in modern history - they have only defeats dressed up as victories. He mocks the assertion that the Arabs created the number zero by asking "What did the Arabs every do with it?" He is a stone cold realist and he states the painful facts so boldly that I fear for his life.
I like this man.

You can make a decent case that their general defeats go back a lot farther than that. Within 200 years after Mohammed, Arabs pulled back from military life, replaced by Turks, Kurds and others, often slaves.
Not long after that, the soldiers took over political power in most of the Muslim world. Most of the great Muslim military leaders since the great Arab expansion have not been ethnically Arab.
Most, if not all, of what muslims claim to have invented were actually invented by peoples conquered and subjugated by muslims.
We’ve seen the same process of false claim of invention attempted even in this modern age. The only thing that keeps it from happening is modern global communications, so when some ridiculous claim of muslim invention gets made, it gets slapped down almost immediately.
But, back in the day when the claims of scientificy muslim inventionisms were being made, there were no global communications, and the true sources of those inventions were swallowed up and rendered inert by conquest.
The simple act of translating something into Arabic was, for all intents and purposes, as close as islam ever got to inventing something “new”.
