Toddler attacked by pit bull: Reports (Boy's grandfather: "The dog was a beautiful pet")
The Provine - Canada ^

A three-year-old is in hospital after being attacked by the family dog Friday, according to media reports.

CTV news reports that the pit bull turned on the toddler just before 2 p.m. after it was let off its chain in the yard of the family home on 133rd Street near 103rd Avenue in Surrey.

The dog belongs to the boy's father.

The child, Justice Paradis, was rushed to Surrey Memorial Hospital, where his family fears he may need plastic surgery after being bitten on his face and other parts of his body.

CTV also reported that the RCMP and B.C. SPCA went to the house and told the family that the dog may have to be put down.

The boy's grandfather, Bill Paradis, told CTV News that there are conflicting emotions because, "The dog was a beautiful pet, except it attacked a child."

"Well other than that, how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln?"

Is Surrey still fairly rural? Anyone know?

Another article on this story... from the photo, it looks rural:

SURREY (NEWS1130) - A three-year-old child is in hospital after being attacked by the family pit bull in Surrey, Friday afternoon. It happened just before 2 p.m. in a home near 103 Avenue and 133rd Street. Freelancer Bill Cook tells News1130 the dog involved was apparently the family pet, "From what I understand, talking with the father is that he normally, never, ever, lets the child go near the dog. But this one time the dog was off the leash and he turned his back for a couple of minutes and before he knew it, the thing was on a full attack and biting his face." The boy suffered multiple cuts to his face and around his eyes. The father was also bit on the arms as he fought off the dog. The SPCA's Lorie Chortyk says the family has agreed to put the pit bull down.

it's all been said in here many times before.
I hope the child has a full and rapid recovery and I'm very glad this did not turn out to be another K9 homicide.

Pit bulls have been bred for generations to be mean. There can be good dogs but it’s still a crap shoot. I personally don’t trust them from experience with them.

On the day of the attack, the dogs were leaping and biting the mane, neck and tail of the poor pony named Billy — a 9-year-old girl’s pet — which couldn’t shake off the dogs or escape.

It took a state trooper to repeatedly club the two dogs before they finally released their grip.

"CTV news reports that the pit bull turned on the toddler just before 2 p.m. after it was let off its chain in the yard of the family home."

"Now standing by in the CTV studios is Professor Muttley of the Canadian Pit Bull Compassionate Society, Professor what do you make of this tragic incident?"

"grrrrr, welllll the fact is people don't want to consider the fact that the pit bull in question has a name, his name is Angel, and Angel had been dealing with severe psychological stress and trauma, seeing the toddler being allowed to live in the house, while he (Angel) was reduced to living outside on the end of a chain. Not a leash, not a soft fiber restraint, but a CHAIN. It's not humane, grrrrr, nobody would want to be chained up like, well, like an animal, and Angel was no different. Angel, like all animals is very territorial, and it should be understood by the public that when Angel was faced with an opportunity to reclaim his lost territory, his instincts combined with the mental duress, just caused him to snap. Sure, we're all sorry about the kid, but some plastic surgery will have him patched up in no time. But what about Angel? They're already talking about killing him for just doing what animals do. We need full animal rights in this country, if Canada is to remain a beacon for civil rights throughout the world, and we need to start with the most persecuted members of animal society, the humble pit bulls."

"uhhh thank you Professor, does Angel have a last name?"

"grrrr, well yes he does, but he just goes by the initials 'O D'."

"O.D.? What's that stand for?"

"grrrr, uhhhh O.D. stands for 'Of Death', NEXT question?"

"How's business as a pit bull defense consultant these days Professor?"

"grrrrRRRRRRRrrrrr, business is GREAT, thanks!"

"I somehow thought so."

Nothing more pleasant than a chained up dog.

The dog may have been a beautiful pet but be that as it may, some pets and children don’t mix. My Westie is horrible with children and we make sure that chiildren don’t pet him or try to play with him.

Your bolded quote indicates that the dog may have been used for dog fighting, since fighting dogs are often kept heavily chained.

I’m glad I don’t hear/read any stories like this about bullmastiffs, because my intent is to get one for our home. I understand they are about the best guard dogs you can have.
