Memorial Service planned to honor Captain Robert S. Craig

Ocean City, MD – A memorial service for Captain Robert (Bob) S. Craig will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25 on the beach at North Division Street. Captain Craig passed away on Saturday, March 28 at the age of 90.

Captain Craig joined the Ocean City Beach Patrol in 1935 and served as its captain from 1946 until retiring in 1987. Captain Craig is credited with building the Ocean City Beach Patrol into the professional organization it is known as today. When Captain Craig turned 90 last July, he was honored for his 52 years of service as a member of the Beach Patrol. A Beach Patrol competition in his honor will continue to be held on his birth date of July 11.

Captain Craig was born in Wilmington, DE on July 11, 1918, the son of the late Frank S. and Marian Kyle Craig. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mason Craig and a son, James Russell Craig, both in 2008, and a sister Barbara Craig.

Captain Craig is survived by his son, Robert M. Craig and his wife Carole Anne, of Atlanta; a daughter, Mary Dale Craig of Ocean City; a grandson, Christopher Kyle Craig, his wife, Lynlee Squires, and a great-granddaughter, Emma Ruth Craig, all of Winston Salem, NC; a brother, Frank S. Craig Jr. and his wife Jane of Melbourne Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.

The public is invited to attend the memorial service, which will be held rain or shine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ocean City Beach Patrol Surf Rescue Association, P.O. Box 158, Ocean City, MD 21843. Please designate checks to the Captain Craig Scholarship Fund.

Captain Robert S. Craig, Ocean City Beach Patrol, saved lives and trained surf lifeguards to do it for over 1/2 a Century. Through his work as a leader, Captain, teacher and coach, he elevated so many people into lofty heights in society and to success.
