The new software lets developers turn the handset into a control panel for other electronics.
CUPERTINO, Calif.--There were many things Apple did not announce Tuesday. It did not unveil a tablet computer with a four-core processor, a touchscreen and a high-speed wireless link to the iTunes media store.
Chief Executive Steve Jobs did not come back early from medical leave. Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPhone software chief Scott Forstall did not show any signs of suffering from rabies. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak did not appear--shaved and sporting green body paint--as a "special guest" to close the presentation with an interpretive dance.
No, Apple was too busy offering up something much more radical, even if the details can be eye-glazingly geeky. Hidden amid the 100 new iPhone software features due later this summer are all the ingredients Apple needs to concoct a monstrously big dose of digital nitroglycerin. Wait for it, because this thing is about to go "boom."
The key is the device's ability to become whatever a user needs. Typically, the more a gizmo does, the worse it gets at each separate job. Less is always more. The iPhone, however, is arguably better at everything it does, because it does so much.
Start with the App store, which is now packed with more than 25,000 applications. Now add the ability to sell subscriptions that regularly deliver fresh content, additional levels for games or new content, all announced Tuesday. Suddenly an iPhone app can be a digital bookstore, or a digital newspaper, or a game that doles out fresh content by the slice. More is more.

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Cyber, I want one. What is it, anyway? LOL!
Will I be able to unlock my iphone for international travel if I install 3.0???

That is already possible and legal through AT&Tso I think, but I don't know, that it will be possible with iPhone OS3.0.
I think you will see more and more reciprocal agreements for iPhone roaming between the Service Providers in the now 80 countries where it has an official presence.
I’ve got the flipping Vista that I hate. We have another XP. We also have two of my old computers. Can’t get rid of them until Cyber takes out the hard drives. Worked in court, and they have a lot of preliminary hearings and trials on the hard drive. They have to be destroyed.
Cyber, OTOH, has a cool new Apple laptop. The thing connects to his XP and my Vista.
Thought this was about the cool prototype I saw last week:
Turn Your iPhone into a Universal Infrared Remote

There could be a killer app i think. You might lose your remote in the couch, but you don’t lose your iPhone. People are paying $80+ for the Harmony universal remots, I’m sure people will buy this iPhone app and module even if it cost $30.
THANKS! I just signed up to be notified when it is released. I have so many remotes to keep track of now... and a 30 year old daughter who has a tendency to carry them with her to the other room, put them down, and forget where. This would solve that problem forever.
Can I marry my IPHONE? No..seriously...can I?
You asked — “Will I be able to unlock my iphone for international travel if I install 3.0???”

You can’t do that now. It’s not available to the public, but only to Developers. It will be available to the public sometime this summer...
For anyone that wants to see the “event” — go to ...
http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/
You can view it here on your Quicktime player. Or, if you have iTunes, you can get the download of the event.
Only in Massachusetts... in other states you may be able to enter a domestic partnership.
I haven’t been this in love..since ... I can’t remember! My heart’s all atwitter!
Now, according to a link on the Forbes article page:
"According to a report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times, Taiwanese manufacturer Wintek will supply the touch panels for an Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) device of some kind, possibly a netbook, that will launch by the third quarter."
Apple may clobber the netbook world with something like I have been calling for years, "The Newton -- done right".
I still have a Newton -- and an eMate 300. No doubt, whatever this new "thing" is, it will bear little resemblance to the Newton, -- but whatever it is, I'll bet it will be an "American Express" gadget: the owner of one will never leave home without it...

When I need to dispose of a hard drive, I remove the top cover of the device and take a sledge hammer to the disks. It warps the platters so that they cannot be read or recovered. It is quicker than doing a low level format of the drive. Whem I need to destroy CD’s and DVD’s, I use the microwave oven for about 3 to 4 seconds. It destroys the reflective lever. As for Vista and XP, I prefer XP over Vista, but that ain’t saying much. The MAC OS is a much more elegant operating system. Unfortunately, if Mac’s do begin to dominate in business, we can look forward to it becoming a primary target for viruses and malicious software. The fact that Mac users presently enjoy fewer problems with viruses and malware has been the result of it’s minority status in the market place, not its lack of vulnerabilities. Viruses are written for platforms which provide the most bang for the buck. Hence, Windows is the target of opportunity. I do like MACs though.
Your theory would be correct...
... if it weren’t for people writing viruses that could only affect certain firewall programs (less than 20,000 possible victims), cell phones (less than 50,000 possible victims), and personal organizers (less than 100,000 possible victims).
There are Windows Mobile viruses - but there are STILL no iPhone viruses in the wild. And the iPhone’s sales dwarf that of WinMobile.
Wow, this thread sounds just like the lead up to the release of Segway!

People have been doing this with PDA's since the the first Palm Pilot was introduced a decade ago!
What is it with some people that when an application comes to THEIR messianic Apple device, it is the penultimate innovation?
I hope you all know there is nothing the iPhone can do that other PDA phones haven't been doing for years.
