Alamo is new passion for Phil Collins

Singer Phil Collins said his life now revolves around the Alamo.

Collins is in town, set to appear at local events commemorating the anniversary of the siege and battle of the Alamo. Though he's mulling the idea of recording a tribute cover album of 1960s songs, he said he's making the Alamo “my main thing” as a collector, history buff and possible author.

“Basically, now I've stopped being Phil Collins the singer. This has become what I do,” he said Monday, standing beside a 13-foot-by-15-foot model of the 1836 Alamo compound that will open to the public this week.

Collins, who is British, said he has “hundreds” of cannonballs, documents and other artifacts from the Alamo, possibly the largest private collection anywhere, in the basement of his home in Switzerland. He said he's collaborating with artist Gary Zaboly on a book about his collection.

His most prized item is a receipt signed by Alamo commander William Barret Travis for 32 head of cattle used to feed the Alamo defenders.

His latest involvement in Alamo history is narrating the introduction of a 13-minute “Alamo diorama light and sound show” at the History Shop at 713 E. Houston St., by the Alamo. Invited guests at a preview tonight will also see a battle site excavation covered with a window on the floor of the shop, which is near the Alamo's north wall, where much of the heaviest fighting occurred.

You really are a work, you mock my fellow GIs being tortured and mutilated until they are all dead, you say that their commanding officer deserved his death because you don’t like him.

You know that you are addressing an army veteran that used the Malmedy massacre as an example while explaining his outrage at your belittling the loss of and murder of American soldiers at the Little Bighorn massacre and you claim that I only want to equal the Nazis and Indians in the murderous barbarity

Let me guess, your bragging about a long line of warriors was really other people that didn’t include you, I’ll make another guess you are super patriot woman.

Show some respect for our dead that died in battle for this nation.

I can't help it that I know history. Okay have it your way. Custer is a hero and so is every person who has ever served. You are correct. I didn't serve. The only reason is that they didn't take women in the military when I went to sign up.

My father served in WWII, my grandfather in WWI. An uncle had a leg cut off by a Japanese pilot after he bailed out of his aircraft. I can prove all of this and I can trace my Fathers family clear back to those that served in the Revolutionary War.

You need an attitude adjustment. Just because someone served in the armed service didn't mean they were good people. I dare you to go to Leavenworth to see for yourself. And as a matter of fact I am a patriot.

That isn’t true Hillary Clinton. Just for grins since you “can’t help it that I know history” what year was that they didn’t take women when you tried to sign up?

1970. I was in college and the Vietnam war was raging. I wanted to join but the only position back then for women in the military was in the medical field. You can’t show me a needle that doesn’t make me faint. I was NOT a candidate.

I remember the era, in fact I enlisted the following year I remember many women that were not in medical, I simply enlisted with no requests for specific duty, they could put me wherever they wanted to, is that what you tried, because by 1970 the military was years past the days when they limited female enlistments to 2%.

All I know is that’s what the recruiter said. Maybe he was old school. Who knows. There’s a lot of water under the bridge since then.

You’ll never believe this, RetiredArmy, but I found a $5 copy of John Wayne’s “Alamo.” It’s a great movie. I can see why Collins admires the courage of Texans.
