It seems more and more people are asking questions on what steps can be taken to prepare for what appears to be a looming crisis, maybe even a breakdown in civilization. This is not a fun subject to discuss, because for most people it represents something that we never thought we would see in the USA.
But the facts are all around us. There is a ever-growing number of people who see the worst of what might happen. And worse, there is an ever-growing list of possibilities that could take our economy to levels not ever seen before. Is it the financial / banking crisis? Is it the ominous threat of a terrorist attack? Or is it a civil war created by an out-of-control government who appears to be over-reaching into individual rights?
The reality is that it could be any of these, or possibly a combination of these and many other scenario's that could play out. Unfortunately, the end result could all be the same. And that is a total breakdown in civilization as we know it, leaving millions of people without access to food and basic care. Think the government will take care of us if that happens? They are actually the ones that have created the mess, so I'm not holding out much hope that they are going to be of any help.

I just want to know where in the heck I’m supposed to GO... Don’t have access to a cabin in the woods yet.
Note to self: start survivalist equipment company, because it’s a bull market right now.
I have thought about the scenario a bit since Obama too over. Not too concerned about myself but do worry about my grand children.
In this particular area, water will never be a problem. Food is not too much if all you want to do is survive. A lot of dried beans and rice are inexpensive and go a long way. Probably some spices and canned goods too. Salt will probably always be available but is so cheap I can see no reason not to have a lot saved.
At least two .22 rifles and/or pistols and a lot of ammo, several thousand rounds at least. A good 12 gauge repeater and at least one powerful rifle and pistol along with a moderate supply of ammo. Also several powerful air rifles with a lot of pellets seem like a good idea to me.
What else is anyones guess.
Might be the only one...
;-)
You said — “Note to self: start survivalist equipment company, because its a bull market right now.”
There you go! That’s the most reasonable thing I’ve heard so far about this big crash in our civilization... LOL...

Mind you, I do believe we’ve got a Great Depression on our hands and it’s going to continue deepening throughout 2009. And we’ll see if it continues deepening throughout 2010, too.
But, one can look back to the last Great Depression and realize that people did get by, although it was mighty hard for some. And now, our population has more assistance to help people from starving completely to death.
The question to ask is if in the last Great Depression, did society quit functioning totally and leave everyone “out in the cold”. No, it didn’t. It was severe and it was a really big problem, but society was still there doing its thing. And so it will be now, although I do believe it will be quite severe.
You go where you have a support network, family, friends, fellow churchgoers, likeminded people. Sounds a lot like home to me. If you’re in a large metro, that may be problematic. But, look back on Katrina. There were pockets of neighborhoods looking out for themselves, protecting each other. They made it through. If we have a period of breakdown, it’ll be like that. Striking out on your own, into the backwoods, where you know no one, sounds like a recipe for disaster, for all but experienced survivalists, to me at least.
agreed Travis, best one out there imo.
One advantage the Neanderthals had over us is they probably always had an abundance of game. With modern hunting gear the game will all be gone within months. Fishing too unless you can fish the sea. Agriculture is probably the way to go enough to live on doesn’ take much land but if you want to sell food that is a different story.
My Father in law is an agronomist. He once told me that a family of 10 can survive on 40 acres just fine if it is good land but they will not have much else. but will live.
Also FrugalSquirrels.com.
Any like minded relatives or friends have a remote place? Start figuring it out. Start learning skills that would be useful to others. Reparing stuff will be hot. Get powerless hand tools now.
Some of those are new to me, thanks!
cast iron. Good for cooking over open fire if necessary.
Cotton cloth, needles and thread. You can repair or even make your own shirts. Got jeans that have holes? Save them anyway you can use them to patch other jeans.
socks, gloves, good shoes or boots.
Tarps in several sizes.
Oil lamps, oil for them and candles.
lighter fluid and flints for lighters.
Think basics.
I watched this show on History Channel called Life After People. Appearently, the Hoover Dam hydro-electric plant could run up to fifty years without any interference from man. I always thought of that as a good fallback place if civilization were to collapse.
