Elementary School, Let the brainwashing begin. (Vanity question)

I heard a disturbing thing today that irked me. I would like your opinion on what should be the next move.

My daughter in the 6th grade came home on the 20th and described an assignment she was given. The assignment was to write about how January 20th 2008 was the greatest day in American history. She questioned why that day was the greatest in our history and the teacher responded by saying, "If you don't think today is the greatest day then you must be racist.".

WTF. The left can not just be content with the day being the inauguration. They have to treat it like they are still victims. I respect Obama as our president, I don't think he is the right person for the job. But the people elected him and I can deal with that for right now. Does the fact that I don't agree with the man make me a racist? Every time that someone questions his policy they are going to go for the race card right from the get go. They must have decks and decks of gold plated race cards. They seem to be the only dealers of the race card and the coveted trump card, "Tolerance". Oh the tolerance card. If you don't agree they hold the tolerance card then you must be intolerant.

I can not understand why we can't let kids be kids. Let parents be parents. Make teachers just be teachers and not re-educators.

Time to visit the teacher, the principal, and the superintendent with the information that you will be going to the media if there is not an immediate apology to your child.

If this comment was said within the hearing of others, then the apology ought to be made in the classroom.

So much for that “post-racial society” we were all led to believe we are entering, eh?

I think you must have meant January 20, 2009 but maybe you didn’t. January 20, 2008 WAS pretty good. I got new puppy back then.

My son got an Obama assignment too on the 20th after they watched the inauguration at school.

Here’s the first question:

What was your favorite part of the inauguration ceremony?

To which my son responded:

Seeing President George W. Bush

and gave some reasons why he was a good president

Second Question:

Did Obama mention any goals we had previously discussed:

I told him to write blah, blah, blah about community service and respect of others.

My son was also called a racist by one of his classmates for not clapping during the ceremony. I told him to tell the boy the next time he says something like that to ask him if he likes GWB. We know he doesn’t and when he says no, tell him he is a racist if he doesn’t like him.

In your case I think it’s a bit more severe since it came directly from the teacher.

The schools are totally liberal indoctrinated with a few anomalies here and there. You just have to decide if you want your child to continue being singled out like that. I know it’s hard because we have tried everything (public, private, homeschooling, private again, and now charter), but it might be time to look at some different options for her.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”-Martin Luther King Jr.

I would tell the teacher that you are very sad to see that Dr. King's vision goes unrealized. By focusing on the color of Obama’s skin and ignoring his character you spit on MLK’s vision and all that he stood for. He wanted people to look at character, not skin color, wasn't that the point.

Oh dear oh dear ... I agree with Carley that a visit to the principal, superintendant, and teacher are in order. However, go to the principal or superintendant first. If you try to address this with the teacher first, that will give him/her a heads-up and a chance to make up a story as to what he/she “really” said. So go to the higher-ups first and work your way down.

Sorry this happened. What a pain to have to try and put it right, eh? But you can’t let your kiddo think this is acceptable behavior from a teacher.

Let me write it for her: Today 1/20/09 was the greatest most historical day of my whole life and I will remember it always. I started my day with a nice breakfast, followed with a good day at school with my friends. When I got home and finished my homework my Mom gave me a snack of milk and cookies, Dad came home and the Family and I had dinner. After Dinner we watched the coverage of the new president then I went to bed. While sleeping I had a dream that tomorrow I and all of the children my age would have to go to work, and continue working till the day I die just to pay back the money our new president will borrow to pay for all his hope and change. 1/20/09 was a great day the last day I was Child.

Complain loudly and often to anybody in authority at that school. Call the local papers. Get that teacher fired. That kind of harassment, intimidation, and political indoctrination is outrageous.

In the schools it is not the teacher, but the pupils, who exercise authority. Party functionaries train their children to be spies and agent provocateurs. The youth organizations, particularly the Hitler Youth, have been accorded powers of control which enable every boy and girl to exercise authority backed up by threats. Children have been deliberately taken away from parents who refused to acknowledge their belief in National Socialism. The refusal of parents to "allow their children to join the youth organization" is regarded as an adequate reason for taking the children away.

Honestly, if things like this are not addressed directly, then there is no hope for any of us. We need people fighting the battle everyday and it is worth the trouble to take a stand.

“January 20, 2009 was the greatest day in history for ME because I found out my teacher was a racist, and that I’d better be skeptical of everything she says. Had it not been for this day, I might have gone on thinking she was knowledgeable and honest.”

Why do you have to come on this website to ask what to do? Your butt should have been at the school ASAP and make it understood that the brainwashing by a fascist will not be tolerated and that you’re only going to tell her once. ONCE.

I would suggest following through with the assignment, and don't worry about the grade.

You can start with how horrible December 26, 1860 was because the Civil War started on that day, but how the horrors of the war eventually led to more growth for our country (whether or not you believe that).

Next, talk about how December 7, 1941, was the worst disaster in our country's history until recently, but it led to a good outcome with our military stopping Hitler.

Third, you can talk about the horror of September 11, 2001, but how under a president who was a great leader in foreign affairs that led to freedom for two coutries.

Finally move on to the fourth date, January 20, 2009, and talk about the sadness at seeing the office of the President of the United States handed out as an entitlement based not on the content of a person's character but on the color of his skin. I would explain how one might hope that despite the shock of such decision, there is hope that it can lead to a post-racial society where we see a diversity of individuals all of whom are simply American rather than a diversity of interest groups all hyphenated-Americans who have been stripped of their individuality and pigeon holed by overt and implied quota systems. You could talk about how the racism of the past that prevented voters from considering a black candidate led to the racism of the present where voters chose a man only because he was black, and how you hope that in the future voters will look beyond race ... and that hope, that chance to change, is why yesterday was a great day.
