Strange rats invade Ondo morgue, feast on corpses[Nigeria]

Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital are still finding it difficult to believe the explanation by Governor Olusegun Agagu and the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kehinde Adedeji, that the missing parts of a corpse deposited at the mortuary of the State Specialist Hospital, Akure were truly eaten by strange rats who have found better diet in human bodies. Although rodents, which experts have said make up more than a third of all living mammal species, adapt to all terrestrial habitats, it remains a mystery that they could survive in a functional mortuary.

In Akure, people now joke that the rats within the premises of the State Specialist Hospital, Akure are probably feeling the impact of global food crisis more than their counterparts elsewhere, hence, their invasion of the morgue within the hospital complex to nibble at the dead bodies kept there.

The activities of rats at the hospital would have gone unnoticed but for the vigilance of the family members of one late Deaconess Grace Ebun Gbiri who died on December 6, 2008, and was kept at the hospital’s morgue in preparation for her burial. Her relatives came to the morgue to collect her remains for burial on December 13, 2008, but after the mortuary attendants had dressed the corpse, one of the deceased’s daughters observed that her mother’s right ear lobe was missing. With this strange discovery, relatives of the deceased, including the husband, wanted to carry out further checks on the body to ascertain the level of mutilation. But it was gathered that mortuary attendants refused to allow them to carry out the checks.

This raised suspicions and the deceased’s family had to use force before they could have their way. Their fear was confirmed as they discovered that more parts of the dead body, including one of her toes and a finger had been chopped off. This led to a fisticuff between the attendants and those who came for the dead body.

After the uproar, attendants told the Gbiris that the mutilation was done by rats. “Rats? What type of rats feed on corpses?” the deceased’s daughter asked, but no one could give her a satisfactory answer.

Thus, the fight resumed and the daughter of the deceased was said to have been manhandled by the attendants. When the attendants discovered that the members of the deceased family were not ready to take their explanation and had sent for policemen, they took to their heels.

However, they were rounded up by policemen before they could leave the premises of the hospital. But they were later released after giving satisfactory explanations to police queries.

But if the police were satisfied by the attendants answers, residents of the town who heard of the activities of the carnivore rats suspected foul play. The deceased’s family were persuaded to go and bury their dead whose funeral ceremony had already started before the discovery.

The deceased has since been buried in Oka-Akoko, far away from the precincts of the rats.

But Governor Olusegun Agagu, during an interactive session with professionals in the state, absolved the attendants of any foul play. The governor said that the missing parts of the corpse were eaten by rats, which invaded the hospital from a nearby bush. The Commissioner for Health also corroborated the explanation of the governor that the missing parts of the late Deaconess Gbiri were eaten by mysterious rats who stormed the morgue from a bush around Aquinas College. The commissioner said although the mortuary was constantly fumigated against pests, including rats, the invasion could not be stopped as long as there were places for the strange animals to hide.

Adedeji also said that there were more corpses in the mortuary than it was designed to cater for effectively. According to him, some people deposited corpses in the mortuary for as long as a year or two. The congestion, he said, had made it difficult for the attendants to effectively monitor what was going on at the place.

He also blamed the slow justice system in the land for the congestion, saying the bodies of armed robbers and other criminals deposited at the morgue could not be given mass burial except the court directed the hospital management to do so.

Although the explanation that flesh-eating rats mutilated Gbiri’s body first came from the attendants and was corroborated by the governor and the commissioner, there are fears that if urgent actions are not taken by the hospital’s management to stop these strange rats from nibbling the dead, they may up their appetite and start attacking patients on their beds, if only to know what the living tastes like.

Thanks BGHater. It remains a mystery that, when humans returned to Bikini atoll years after the nuke tests, rats came down to meet the boats. ;')

What is so hard about understaning that rats eat whatever is on hand including human flesh?
