Dropping or raising some symbol on New Years Eve is a tradition around here and many other places. Following is a partial list of events scheduled for this year in the surrounding communities in Southcentral, PA.
Harrisburg will drop a strawberry. Nobody knows why.
Hummelstown will drop a Lollipop. Years ago there used to be a manufacturer in town.
Lebanon will drop a bologna. Lebanon is the home of Seltzers Lebanon Bologna.
Cleona will drop a pretzel. Shueys Pretzel company is one of the first in the US and they still make them.
York will drop a White Rose. York is known as the White Rose City.
Lancaster. Lancaster will drop a Red Rose. Lancaster is known as the Red Rose City.
Red Lion will drop, what else, a Lion.
Shippensburg will drop an Anchor. No one knows why.
Hershey will raise a Kiss. (They should raise a pinnate with a lot of jobs going to Mexico.)
Mechanicsburg will raise a Wrench.
Dillsburg will drop a Pickle.
Somewhere north of here they drop a sled (I forget where). That is where American Flyer sleds were made.
Hanover drops a Potato Chip. Utz Potato Chips are made there.
So, what does your community or surrounding communities do?
we drop a snowmobile from a bridge.
The hell if I know. We're usually dead asleep by 10 o'clock.
My town drops services and raises taxes.
Atlanta has the peach drop.
Baltimore will drop a sailboat. Norfolk drops a crab (or at least they used to. I imagine they still do)
I grew up in a small town of 250 in Colorado. Every New Years Eve my father, who was a musician, used to drive to the top of a hill just outside of town, and play Auld Lang Syne on his trumpet. You could hear it all over town.
That sums up Illinois.
Drop wages. Raise Taxes.

Pueblo has the Annual “Chile” Drop....a big red pepper! LOL
One year we dropped a car off a cliff.....and we were still in it.

Clinton Iowa should drop their pants.
