Two DUIs is very serious in today’s military. At least he will get representation at his court martial.
It's not good for you, but say you were just a few months from retirement, and discovery of your "disability" might well result in loss of time needed to get a better retirement, you might well seek folk remedies.
If he'd been doing a lot of drinking prior to this he'd had earlier DUIs and been busted out much sooner. That's why I think it was an effort to beat the retirement game.
All he'd need to have done was see a private doctor and get some prescriptions for glucophage or other medicine that would help get his blood sugar levels down. He'd had a good A1C at his terminal physical and no one would be the wiser.
Worse, though, he may be on course to develop Type I, so he's gambling with his life. Least of his worries is a courtmartial.
Yep. The days of sweeping DUIs under the rug are over. In today's military, you are pretty much allowed one alcohol-related incident, go to rehab and then don't ever get a second one. A second alcohol-related incident is a career-ender. To be fair, one alcohol-related mulligan is more than you'll get in many civilian jobs.
My money says he'll get busted down to E-8 and allowed to retire with full benefits.
