Mountain lion suspected in attack on family's dogs

When Scott Nobles returned home from tending to a sick horse, he and his fiancée were shocked to find one of the couple’s dogs badly hurt and bleeding, and the other dead.

“I called the cops because I thought someone had shot my dog in the head, that’s how bad the damage was,” said Nobles, a deputy with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Apple Valley station.

He soon learned it was not a human that attacked his dogs.

The attack took place... inside the couple’s back yard.

“We heard the puppies whining and crying, but we couldn’t find the other two,”

Then the couple found the grisly sight. The fight was so violent that blood and hair was matted to the wall of the couple’s home.

Nobles is concerned for the safety of children in the neighborhood.

“There’s a bus stop not more than half a mile away from here and if it can take down a 75-pound dog with no problem, there’s no telling what it can do to a kid who weighs less than 100 (pounds),”

Happens pretty much all the time in Washington ... there was a cougar on school grounds the other day ... they just wander around town - then there’s bear and coyote too ... the worst is Eastsider’s who come over to hunt ...

Scary stuff.

I spotted one in my yard here in East San Diego County back in 1994. Even though the cat paid no more attention to me than a passing glance it was chilling. Haven't seen one since though I have seen tracks.

I got curious about CA laws regarding mountain lions:

People feed the deer. The deer come down for the food. The lions follow the deer.(Plus the lions partake of an occasional garbage can meal themselves.)

Here in the foothills of Los Angeles, we see them often. One came into my friend’s community; the neighbors all went down to Fish and Game to report it. F&G said they were a protected species, that they should carry horns or sticks or something to scare them off.

The police killed a 140 lb male the other day in a community near here; they didn’t want to mess with it, I guess.

Too bad the humans are not a protected species.

“A Fish and Game official will investigate”

And charge the family for unduly annoying the mountain lion, probably.

They'll investigate and then tell them not to worry, the cougar will move on. Probably right, it'll move on to Hesperia for it's next easy meal.

Thanks for the ping.

Of course the silly-a$$ ALF crowd will whine and moan that its man who's encroaching on the cougar's habitat.

Hunt this wildcat down and dispose of him....anyway they can see fit.

Oh, while you're at it, get rid of the Endangered Species List. Just 'cuz some wild animal is close to extinction and its a threat to man and his domesticated animals, they should be killed regardless if it exterminates the species.

Good for the Arcadia PD, they did something about it. It’s a shame more local PD’s don’t do the same thing because CA F&G only give lip service.

They need to get rid of these silly laws and declare open season on these killers.

Bears don’t scare me. Mountain lions terrify me. The noise they make is otherwordly. They are called ghost cats for a reason.

I would be hard pressed not to kill one that came onto my property, and answer questions later.

Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up!

I see stories regularly about folks getting ticketed or worse for killing a bear, wolf, fox, coyote, whatever that’s on their property or terrorizing their kids or themselves. If it was me I believe I could manage to keep my mouth shut.
