He sponged off his parents after high school, slept under boardwalks and played in little dives on the Jersey shore until somebody ‘important’ saw him and decided he was the “new Bob Dylan”.
He also confessed in a 70s magazine article [which I defy you to ever track down, now] that he was going to tell the draft board he was ‘queer’ if his number came up.
All of his ‘working Joe’ ballads are based on observations of other people’s lives, not his own.
