Ferrari 250 GTO sold for €20 million at auction making it most expensive car in the world

Ferrari 250 GTO sold for €20m at auction The most expensive car in the world

A car widely renowned as the most beautiful of all time is also now officially the most expensive after a model sold for €20 million at an auction.

Only 39 models of the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO model were ever built, from 1962 to 1964. It was already considered one of the most valuable cars in the world, previously thought to have been worth approximately €14 million. But with the recent record-breaking sale, it seems the Ferrari 250 GTO is even more valuable than had been thought.

The fall of the hammer that sold the car for a whopping €20 million smashed the world record to bits. The previous holder was a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder which sold for about €7 million in May.

Powered by a three-litre V12 engine, the 302-horsepower Ferrari 250 GTO can reach speeds of 283km per hour.

And just who snapped up the wonderful wheels? An unknown buyer from England…

"A car widely renowned as the most beautiful of all time..."

It's certainly in the top 10...maybe even five, but for my money, it would take a lot more work to knock the somewhat less exotic E-Type Jag out of the top spot...

I was at the 1993 National Ferrari meet in West Palm Beach, FL. They were using a go cart to tow an F-1 across the award area and then they towed it by a California... not taking into account the huge exposed tires on the F-1... which scraped the mint condition California. The owner literally wet his pants. I have an old VHS tape laying around here somewhere. One of the "Priceless" moments I caught on tape.

Where does one drive a $28 Mil car these days? How fast does one dare drive it? Do you valet park it? Does it have any room in back for the groceries? A quart of milk?

When the highway patrolman is writing your speeding ticket and leaning on your window, do you tell him to watch the paint and aluminum?

I guess you can’t park it on the street in Manhattan anymore.

How much is a tune up?

I think the idea is that you have the butler follow you in the Bentley with the baggage, canapés, 12v. espresso machine and concubines  :-)

Not so sure, I’ll find out ... but did you know ...The GTO is an acronym for Gran Turismo Omologato, which is Italian for Grand Touring Homologated. Say that 3X fast! ;D

Just read on a blog that Leno is rumored to be the buyer. He usually enjoys telling about his finds, wonderful if he’ll say tonight?

I'm guessing that the insurance company would insist that it be kept in a climate controlled private 'museum' and that it only be driven on a closed course.

The owner probably has several other collector cars and employs at least one fulltime mechanic.

Interesting! That would contradict the Bild and Sun articles as he is certainly not an "Englishman" but it wouldn't be the first time the Press either got it wrong or was hoodwinked.
