Mars Petcare US Announces Nationwide Voluntary Recall Franklin, Tennessee (September 12, 2008)—Today, Mars

Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

I recommend that you keep your ping list on your FReeper homepage. That way you can use it even if you’re not using your own computer, and others can use it too. I’ve never had the ping list on my FReeper homepage abused.

I bought some Pedigree yesterday, against my better judgement. I usually don’t buy mass market brands for this very reason. Luckily the SKU that I bought isn’t on the list. For now.

As I know many of you are aware, I've been pretty quiet the last couple of months. I would like to state my appreciation to all of you for your expressions of concern.

Unfortunatly, we need to do more:

1. The FDA and AAFCO have neither the ability, the willingness, nor the desire to implement or enforce the changes in pet food regulation that all of us desire.

2. All of the hard work that we have done to get Title X of the FDAAA passed into law has largely accomplished NOTHING! The PFI, along with some complicity from AAFCO has succeeded in burying the "mandates" called for in other programs of indeterminant completion.

3. The FDA has already failed to meet even the simplest standard called for in the FDAAA.

4. The FDA (in the "tomato" crisis) has already made public admissions that they are not able to "PREVENT" these problems, and, in fact, are largely unable to enforce any standards.

5. In the 18 months since the pet food recall, how many new field test agents has the FDA hired? ZERO!!! Yet, bonuses for FDA management have accompanied higher appropriations.

6. NOT ONE SINGLE ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN BY THE FDA.

7. NOT ONE SINGLE MEETING HAS TAKEN PLACE WITH THE SO-CALLED "FDAAA TASK FORCE" SET UP IN JANUARY BY AAFCO.

Given these facts, I have been searching for another alternative to try and achieve the goal of DefendOurPets, namely, to to PREVENT (to whatever degree humanly possible) a recurrence of past disasters.

I have reached the conclusion that the best way to achieve this goal is to establish a testing and standards program of our own.

If the FDA and AAFCO cannot or will not do the job, then we must!

Did you notice that the infant formula recall in China is for the same reason — melamine in the baby formula to boost the protein reading? Despicable!
