LANCASTER [CALIFORNIA]- The weather's warm and climbing toward hot. There's a flurry of activity on the northwest corner of West Avenue H and the Antelope Valley Freeway.

"Peaches and Screams," which organizers bill as the 70th annual Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival although there have been gaps, is slated to open Friday afternoon and run through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1.

That's 11 days of fun, food, festivities and, hopefully, family.

The 50th Agricultural District's fair draws about 2,500 exhibitors and 15,000 exhibits or entries each year, the majority coming from Valley residents who want to feel a part of their community fair and celebration.

Every year, youngsters from around the Valley and nearby areas raise market animals to be judged and sold at the annual Kiwanis Junior Livestock Auction, this year on Thursday, Aug. 28, in the R. Rex Parris Show Arena.

One of the fair's highlights, the Robertson's Palmdale Honda Concert Series, opens Friday with rising country star Gary Allan.

Diamond Rio will be the opening act.

Fergie, a solo artist and vocalist for the Black Eyed Peas, brings "An Evening with Fergie" to the fair Saturday.

Grupo Montez de Durango will entertain the audience Sunday. Lupillo Rivera will open the concert.

Country also is on tap Monday with Jason Aldean and Terri Clark. The comedy team of Williams & Ree open for the headliners.

Tuesday will be classic rock with John Fogerty, a founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Heavy metal band Poison brings its "Live, Raw & Uncut Summer Tour 2008" to the fair Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Sebastian Bach, former lead singer of Skid Row, will open the concert.

Grandstand seating for all concerts is free with paid admission, except for "An Evening with Fergie," when grandstand seating is $35.

I grew-up in Palmdale. The fair was always a big thing each year. There was not alot to do in the AV in the 60’s & 70’s.
