There is an art museum in Baltimore, MD. This museum has a section devoted entirely to fakes. They display paintings and sculpture that have been determined to be fakes. They explain the "fakes" histories to include how they were duped and how it was discovered as being fake. It is very fascinating and the most popular part of the museum.

What is most surprising is that some of the artists that produced the fakes were really quite talented, just a bit weak in the honesty sphere.
But the museums helped by their desire to believe, oft times despite evidence to the contrary. I always liked the paintings since they seem to require the most skill and preparation to fake.

(you don't have to be brilliant, not being stupid is enough.)
