Every time I'm stuck at a railroad crossing for several minutes while a mile long train of cars goes by and by and by, I can't for the life of me figure out how or where the power comes from one or two front engines to pull all those cars...............

And another thing, how does a person get a job driving one of those things?

“I can’t for the life of me figure out how or where the power comes from one or two front engines to pull all those cars...”

Steel wheels on steel rails = very little friction to overcome. Can’t go up or down much of a grade (hill) though.
