Ultimately, you are right. According to Big Bang theory, this universe exploded into existence about 13.7 billion years ago out of nothing. Why? No answer from science, and there probably never will be. God is as good an explanation as any.
As far as the creation of life on this earth, there are tantalizing hints that it may have come about spontaneously, but certainly nothing substantial.
