Ultimately, you are right. According to Big Bang theory, this universe exploded into existence about 13.7 billion years ago out of nothing. Why? No answer from science, and there probably never will be. God is as good an explanation as any.
As far as the creation of life on this earth, there are tantalizing hints that it may have come about spontaneously, but certainly nothing substantial.
The way i see it, very simply. There is some degree of evolution but what changes things and what created matter and space in the first place?
