200-Pound Bear Chased Up Home's Back Yard Tree By Kittens

Officials To Assess Situation

The stuck bear has kept homeowners living in the 1900 block of Votaw Road on edge Friday.

"(The bear) was out looking for a place to live and got startled and took refuge in the tree," Florida Fish and Wildlife worker Tom Shupe said.

Local 6 showed video of homeowners gathering around the home to see the animal hanging onto a branch.

Homeowners said kittens chased the bear before it became stuck.

"(The kittens) had the bear just cornered at the fence and it saw the tree and just ran up the tree and has been there ever since," homeowner Jason Daniels said.

"It is not uncommon," Shupe said. "They are a very timid bear and very nonaggressive and quite often it is a little poodle or cat that chases them up a tree."

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have been called to the scene to determine what to do with the bear, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

I chased off a 220lb black bear one summer deep in the woods. When we noticed each other it started to run off, then stopped and came back to his original spot and paused. I figured I didn’t want to encourage any further curiosity so I yelled at him like he was a stray dog, “Go on, get!” And just like a dog, he turned tail and left at a fast trot. I was happy to see that since the only thing I had with me was a canteen and a cheap machete that had already been bent into a 90degree “L” shape by some hard brush. Not really a great feat considering a 10 lb cat can do the same thing.

Sounds like the bravery of past heroics have been diminished a bit ...

The comdeian that has the ‘country fried video’ show recently had a segment about a bear coming up to a house and looking in a window where a cat looking out spat/slapped the window with its paw and the bear ran away... So for some reason some bears must be scared/wary of cats.

Here is a short video snippet on youtube of a cat jumping out of the brush, startling a bear and then chasing after it. It’s hilarious.

Ha! No, really black bears are known for being timid, I just didn't want him thinking he could hang around or feel bold if we met again, plus it was summer which I'm pretty sure is their mating season - they might be prone to act a with a bit more enthusiasm.

Need to find that tree where “D. Boon Cilled a Bar” and carve “BFD” below it.

I live in this same area. Wow, I used to think my rottie was tough for standing off with a black bear a few years back. I’d hate for Ursa to run into these two kittens, they’re tough Florida kittens.
