A St. Louis-area man was injured Tuesday after colliding with an armadillo in the opening miles of the second stage of the Tour of Missouri.

Dan Schmatz, 33, of Ballwin, was riding in the peloton at about 20 mph when he and teammate Jonathan Garcia of Boulder, Colo., met with the wayward animal.

Schmatz, who lives in Longmont, Colo., was taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries was not known Tuesday afternoon.

That's the sound that was made by the impact with the armadillo.

The armadillo is a creature created by Hanna-Barbera.

Never bring a bicycle to an armadillo fight.

Here's the sound made by impact with a badger.

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To prove to the possum and armadillo that it could be done.

I've lived in the KC area for about 15 years and it's only been in the last 2 or 3 that I've begun to see armadillos around here. Must be working their way up from Texas, no doubt due to global warming.

Did the armadillo have the right-of-way?

Typical MSM story...no mention is made of the armadillo’s political affiliation. If the armadillo had been a Republican, that fact would have been in the headline.

Armadillos tend to jump straight up when they are startled. They can damage cars if they are run over.

Texas Horned Lizards or Horned Frogs were common in Southwest AR in the 1960’s. I guess all the talk about global cooling scared them and they left. :0)
