I think a lot of you are missing the point.
This really is about respecting the rule of law and basic principles of responsible citizenship.
Doesn’t matter if you hate sealions or love them.
If there is a law against killing them in this manner then the guy should have the book thrown at him. period.
If the sealions are becoming a serious nuisance and threatening real property then I’m sure that a legal means for dealing with them will become necessary.
Either a relocation program or a limited hunting permit is the most likely solution.
It’s pretty clear this asshat has a serious problem with anger management.
Thank God it wasn’t someone’s dog that came over and swiped a piece of bait from this friggin jerk’s bucket.
My personal view is just because God gave us dominion over the animals doesn’t mean it’s ok to indiscriminantly slaughter them just cause we’re having a bad day.
(Unless of course you have a permit and intend to actually eat or use it after killing it.)
;)
Hmpf. no real smilies on this forum, huh?
BTW, Hi everyone. This is my first post here.
Figured I’d jump into a nice light topic first before any serious political debate.
You wrote:
“Are people evil for killing termites that are destroying their house?”
No. Of course fish bait is just fish bait and you expect wild animals to wonder off with your bait if they get a chance. That’s why they’re called WILD.
“What living things are alright to kill?”
Certainly not something that isn’t yours, that you don’t have a license for, that is federally protected and that will land you in jail. How’s that for starters?
The man is a moron. A sea lion steals your bait? Annoying, yes. But you don’t stab the darn WILD sea lion for it. You try again, or go somewhere else. That’s better than going to jail any day.
This is a daily occurrence here with dogs and cats that offend locals and the police do nothing because it is hard to prove.
There are pictures of a clever sea lion swimming up and thru the engineered gate to keep lions out of the fish ladder .
The lions apparently kill very many salmon.
I don’t care how angry he was. Killing a wild animal is not a severe offense...not unless it is an endangered species. It sounds to me like these things are overpopulated. I don’t care what the stupid law says. Environwhackos have had their way with these laws and now they are a joke. If they want to prosecute him, it should be done as a fishing infraction. Take away his fishing permit. Maybe for life. End of problem. Jail time is stupid.
I will now pose the requisite Cajun response:
“What does sea lion taste like?”
One-thousand pounds of "what"?
WELCOME JTC ... as a relative newcomer, my hat’s off to ya’ for leaping right into the fray ... with an intelligent, succinctly worded and wry commentary on the delicate subject (speaking as a seal lover but as someone who understands they can be problem children and ought to be controlled somehow or ‘tother, but, please, not with a Henkles!!)
Chicken of the Sea, silly.
BTTT
Correct, I’ve seen the pics. Some of these sea lions have come back so many times and can’t be scared away they have been named. I believe the days are numbered for the ones that are real problems.
In the case of this guy in Newport Beach, I don’t think he should be treated any differently than the fishermen who illegally killed the animals on the Columbia River, they were heavily fined.
What does sea lion taste like?
A lot like nutria, I believe.
This guy is a nut case, who shouldn't be allowed near the water.
I agree.
I feel badly for the injured (now deceased) sea lion ... not for the lawbreaker.
Welcome to Free Republic.
He had no right to stab a wild animal. Even a deer cannot be hunted this way. The human killer obviously lost his temper. He should have been restrained by anyone close by.
Vietnamese fisherman do not play by our rules. They are more trouble to ordinary fisherman in the Gulf Coats area than sea lions ever thought of being.
