Glenwood colt survives lion attack ( Mountain lion )

When Lee Kirk found her 3 1/2-week-old colt cut and bloodied in its Silt Mesa corral the morning of July 4, it raised two questions.

The answer to the first — what went after the foal — appears to be a lion.

The deeper mystery is how the colt managed to avoid being killed in the attack, which happened after it got out of its corral.

“Before (the lion) could reach the jugular and bite him, something stopped him,” Kirk said.

Kirk has a hunch that something involved a herd of seven horses in the field surrounding the corral. One or more of them may have fended off the attacker, and she believes one in particular may have been responsible.

Before the incident, an older gelding named Smoky “had bonded with this foal to the point where he didn’t ever want to leave the mare and foal at all,” Kirk said.

Kirk found blood on Smoky’s belly at the same height as shoulder wounds suffered by the foal. She thinks Smoky came to his aid and escorted him back to his pen.

veterinarian Eric Everett...The large and deep wounds it suffered “could have been pretty much only made by a lion,”

Is a mountain lion like a panther ?

I cannot get over the vast array of wildlife you folk have over there ! I suppose these creatures, along with bears and wolves are proof that man has to take the rough with the smooth.
Our animal life is rather dull; around my way we only have rabbits, hares, badgers, foxes etc. Mind you a couple of hours drive away in Sherwood Forest you will find goshawks, pine martens, concubines, and in the marshes the other direction there are capybars, a type of giant rodent from South America. They escaped from some zoo and cause problems with the dykes.
So you see we have a problem with Latin American illegals as well!

Yes, and living in Arizona, we have more than most. There is still a lot of wilderness area in the States.

Arizona - proper America. It has a reputation over here as being beautiful but harsh Cowboy Country. We know it most as the place where the 3 Clint Eastwood Fistful of Dollars movies were filmed. The music score brings to my mind the sound of screaming coyotes and savage Indians. Mind you my image may be 50 years out of date I dont know.
Our countryside seems boring when looking at your gaff !

Arizona is now a mixture of a little bit of the metropolitan, plenty of suburban Southwest, with the rest still being the Wild West.

Lincolnshire looks quite inviting compared to Arizona. Pastoral. Green.
