Vanity Pool Table Purchase tips
6-6-07

Posted on 06/06/2007 4:11:44 AM PDT by Global2010

Thanks to the techno geeks at FR our family after much thought are a happy owner of a 60 in HDTV Wega. The Wega is in tandem with two other tv screen one of which I am wireless posting.

So really happy and it was a whole lot of work on my behalf but the crew of techno geeks helped sort out the salesmen pitches.

So NOW I want new advice. Since King Vanity and I are more home bound and I am working around from shift to shift and with his needs I can't get out to do a 40 min hike without an RN to be here I have been working on innovative breaks from 24 hr care.

I love my "lil pony" which is a tame version of the mechanical bull, I can walk around the property at 10 min at a time without his needing supervision for health care needs.

So excepting this new phase of life I want something I love but can't leave to do but have a huge area on the other side of our home where I can hear him or watch him on a tv monitor.

I want a pool table...a full size, pro and I have the room.

So the forum is open.

I don't have people in or out of our home other than volenteers or vendors...basically I will be playing myself but better than cards or internet all the time.

So the suggestions are welcomed for companys, and consumer watch, and what would you have done better if you could re do your pool table room.

Thanks.

Thanks.

If you want to leave humorous posts great but if you slam us I will ask to have your post deleted.

Also those price ranges are much needed.

Ya know, I think we have one of those things around here somewhere. I dunno. I vaguely recall somewhere around the second week of ownership, about 5 years ago, the kiddoes decided it’d make a great dumping place for all their stuff. Thank your lucky stars you live by yourself so you’ll actually be able to play on it.

FWIW..
I’ve had an Oldham for about 10 years, and I love it.

My understanding is that it’s not as much about the manufacturer, but rather the thickness of the slate making the “tabletop” itself.

I have two very organize supply rooms.

LOL Hence I want a perfect green felt to play on.

Just wont do to have a wrinkle when going for that bank shot.

I nor my son is allowed in taverns w/pool tables (don’t drink but his disfigurement and me ordering 7up lost out).
So it is a love and when I had good respite care shooting pool in a smokey/beer room was not my priority on the top 10 things to do.

Not that it isn’t cool.

I prefer a Burberry and a smell of a good cigar. LOL

I get your point though for the 4 grand will you get use out of it more than a novel item.
Sure beats cards.

I want to start fishing so bad but with KV grown up his Chair and issues cannot sit out and fish with me like we use to and catch all them OceanPerch gosh those were some of the greater days.

I would get a top of the line Vally With a 3 1/3 x 7 table.

That size is the most common for “Bar” tables and its best to hone your skills on a similar size table to the ones you are most likely to show them off.

3 1/3 should be 3 1/2*

As someone with a misspent youth and having played professionally, in my mind there is only one table to own.

Brunswick Gold Crown - 4 1/2x9’

Money can be saved by shopping around for a used one as there are many available. New cloth and possibly refinishing the side skirts is all that is needed. Try to find one with automatic ball returns.

Good luck on it not turning into just another ironing board. :-)

I have a 9 ft. Olhausen with Simonis cloth.

Purchased it new on an annual Labor Day sale at Champion Billiard and BarStools for about $3,400.

The cost of the pool table is most determined by the detail in the base...legs, etc.. The slate top is in 3 pieces and from Italy. The rails are hardwood cushioned and are true and haven't deteriorated over time.

The Simonis cloth is far superior to felt and costs about $600 to replace by the dealer...but you might be able to find a free-lancer if you ask around. My cloth has been replaced several times since 2001 because well...we take our pool shooting seriously.

We play approximately 100 racks per week so it does get a lot of use.

In that time we've learned that it's best to have the table set up so that you don't need 'stubby' too much of the time...the pool cue that is shorter and necessary when the ball is against the rail, etc..

If you purchase it used, you can get a much better deal but it does cost to have it broken down, transported and set up again...in our area (Washington, DC) about $500.

I would NEVER purchase a table already broken down because you never know.

Also, ask for the store's best crew because once when I moved, the techs used too much caulk on the slate seams which hardened and caused noticeable interference until we rolled a ball over the area to flatten it. (Did I say we are serious about our pool?) LOL!

If you have any more questions please feel free to Freepmail or post them here.

It's a thing of beauty to observe somebody who knows and understands english...how to control the cue ball.

You can tell immediately when somebody knows how to shoot pool. It's a game of brains not brawn.

One more thing we do..we have a scratch jar. The offender puts a quarter in the jar and over time, it pays for a new cover.

Also, buy a leather-type cover for the table when not in use so that the cloth is not compromised.

Enjoy.

Quite a nice score.

This time around I want to do my own work I don’t hire pool boyz anymore.

My understanding (and there may be someone here who will correct me) is that you should avoid 1/2-inch at all costs. 3/4-inch should be the minimum you accept, and 1 inch the ideal.

Naturally, the thickness of the slate adds to the cost of the table (sometimes dramatically) and the table's weight. Which is not a consideration that should be diregarded, not only if the table ever needs to be moved (remember that each time it's moved it will need to be "professionally' leveled), but also with regard to the table's actual location in your house. (If it is not installed on the slab in the basement, then you need to take a look at the floor joists that will support the table).

Moreover, best make plans to have the table delivered by professional movers (this is not the sort of job that a couple friends, six-packs, and a truck can do). Bear in mind that professional movers usually surcharge for pool tables--it's that much of a job.

Oh, don’t forget to check that it’s slate in the first place. :)

I agree on the slate thickness, 3/4”-1”.

7/8” is common now in many quality tables. It reduces the weight some without a noticeable difference from the 1” slate.

I already have a whole room as I pull a whole lot of laundry per day and table to stow and fold.

Lol My spare rooms are where my vendors stock. I have a laundry room and have a table to fold also a room to store all his 4 wheelchairs. Kinda like a atv room without oil leaks.

We only have one room in the house guest room never hardly been touched in 20 yrs. but we clean/dust it.
Kitchen well I eat fruits/vegies and believe in Paper plates as you can rinse and toss them in recycle.

My only big concern about my cloth and shooting pool is I have a 2, 3, and 4 year old White Hunting Labs.

If they EVEN touch my table I will Dog Whisperer their lean 97 pound arses out.

There cool and listen but on bad health dayz they can be kids.

No if I get a table they are going to respect my cue stick... they are all boy and Nightmare of them trying to fetch the balls and .......no walk around table saying no with cue stick tapping noses.

The Pool Post info just gets better.

Thank You.

I want a base I have looked at but I need pool return pockets, slate, quality of green.

This pool table will be a self play game. Doesn’t mean I don’t want top notch for resale down the road.

There has to be a reputable company that does this kind of work.

I am thinking of $3,599 top price and my home is a dream for those who deliver due to all the Wheelchair width.

My biggest concern is I want a pro size. I use to play years ago and if it is not regulation size/slate ect. I will get frustrated.

I don’t care what the frame/legs look like as long as they can support the table.

Webtv I can’t do live stream.

Maybe that is a good thing.

My Labs are well trained but with health issues and us being not home then home and tired the boyz have been so helluva confused.

Just getting ‘em back on a play, run, hunt, eat routine. With out being arrested and me having to post bail. J/K but close.
