BOSTON -- The injury hex hovering over the Yankees is now affecting players before they join the team, including Roger Clemens.
During Saturday's game, general manager Brian Cashman got a call from Clemens, who said he's feeling fatigue in his right groin and will not be able to make his planned debut Monday in Chicago.
"He's optimistic that this isn't something that's a big deal," Cashman said. "Fatigue is the word he used. He's going to go to Tampa and our doctors there will take a look at it and then we'll have our own word."
Clemens, 44, told Cashman he might be able to pitch next weekend against the Pirates at Yankee Stadium. He has a history of leg problems, and after a hamstring strain affecting him during the World Series in 2005 with Houston, he and his agents hatched the idea of shortening the season with midseason comebacks.
Clemens signed with the Yankees on May 6, but with the team struggling throughout the month, he might have rushed to get ready, perhaps increasing the chance of sustaining an injury. He threw 102 pitches in the second of his three minor league tuneups.
"Whether that contributed or not, I can't say," Cashman said. "It's a fair question to ask, but I don't have an answer. He has a long history of groin problems, we lived it here."
Monday, Clemens threw six scoreless innings in Triple A, but Cashman, who was in Scranton, thought he saw Clemens hop while on the mound and suspected something. By Friday, Clemens alerted the Yankees that something was not right, though he did try to throw a short bullpen session before telling Cashman he wasn't ready.

Hillary's curse continues.
He’s nursing a sore groin
...his own, we sincerely hope.
“The injury hex hovering over the Yankees...”
Yeah, I hear A-Rod also has a sore groin.
Isn’t Clemens coming back just to keep Greg Maddux from passing him in career wins? RC=348, GM=337. It seems futile, though—Greg is three years younger and is still pitching reasonably well for a competitive team.
The only bad news here is that it did not occur during his first start for the Yank-offs so it would have cost George more money.
