SEATTLE - Air Canada says it has exercised options and purchase rights to order 23 Boeing 787s.

At average list prices the order would be worth about $3.7 billion.

Air Canada now has 37 of the new mid-size widebody planes on order and says it's the largest North American customer for the new plane Boeing is rolling out this summer at the Everett factory.

The Virgin order was already up here, but no word from freepers on the bigger Air Canada order...

Mighty good day for Boeing... 38 more 787s sold, with two 777s cancelled... just one day after moving 15 737s and 5 more 787s...

That makes 523 orders on the books.

0 built.

It took them 15 years to build 500 767s....

Actually...it looks like BOEING is in the process of heavily-considering a 2nd production line for the Dreamliner.

In the late 1990's , a 2nd line for the 737NG was established but orders fell below production levels and BOEING had a bit of a knot to untangle.

This is what they seek to avoid...making snap decisions that could become a labor/financial liability in the future.
But since the Dreamliner is an ultra-competitive, clean-sheet design, I think (personally) that a 2nd line should be worthwhile well into the future.

China will help build this one - they need a new AWACS and air tanker platform. ;)

If this order pace keeps up for a while longer, they'll have to. On one side, you don't want to overinvest in capital. But on the other side, you still need to be able to deliver your product, and one would think that having two lines open would perhaps increase intra-Boeing competition, and might lead to a little more innovation in the manufacturing process.

Why is this on FR?

Stuff like this is always on FR. FR isn't just for political news, but also for news that effects this country. Boeing doing well against the Froggies AribusT for example. Boeing, and aviation in general, has a big following here.

There' also space, physics, electronics, computers etc, etc.

FReepers are multifaceted.

An have them fall out of the sky, no thanks.

Seriously, parts for these planes are being build all over the world, I think even some of the wings are being build in Japan!

It is ersatz French bashing.

A hobby I heartily endorse, and seek out on FR.

Thanks!
