HACKENSACK, N.J. -- State Education officials ordered five employees at northern New Jersey schools fired after discovering they have criminal records.
One worker was convicted of taking semi-nude photos of an underage child, another took pension money from a widow, and three others are drug offenders. All were working at northern New Jersey schools through last week.
Education officials ordered the firings after being told of the workers' convictions by The Record of Bergen County, which investigated school workers' pasts.
Education commissioner Lucille Davy said authorities are looking into the problem.
School officials say they don't know how many more people with criminal records are working around children because there is no system for checking school workers' backgrounds once they're hired.
Four of the five workers committed their crimes after becoming school employees. The fifth broke the law between the time of his background check and his hiring two years later.

Gee,do we really have to fire em ? I mean can't their salaries be worked into our next tax increases ???
Disgusting. Give 'em the lash! Then again, they would probably enjoy it.
Good. But they should all have had background checks and I would think they should have to report any kind of criminal offenses to the Board of ED if one occurs after they are hired.
Will they be transferred to jobs at the State Teacher's Union? They seem well qualified....
Firing employees with criminal records who have access to children? What a novel concept.
They could start by reading the local police blotter...
Good grief.
Thomas Trantino, PAROLED cop killer, origianlly sentenced to death, commuted to live without parole..........working in the cafeteria of a Hunterdon County high school.
Now if only they could fire all the politicians with criminal records.
I've had criminal background checks before being hired when I've worked at summer camps and in schools as well. At one place, my finger prints had to be taken in police headquarters. In addition, my name was drawn at random, so I had to give a urine sample and take a breath test. (I was happy to do these things in order to reassure parents.) I don't understand what they do in NJ when they hire people.
