Posted on 03/17/2007 5:35:34 AM PDT by Sherri

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been informed that Menu Foods, Inc., a private-label pet food manufacturer based in Statesville, Ontario, Canada, is recalling all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food produced at its facility in Emporia, Kansas between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.

Menu Foods, Inc. has identified the potentially contaminated products on the Internet at www.menufoods.com/recall.

Uh oh. A lot of old people are going to go hungry. This IS a Republican administration so all old people are eating dog food, right? It's just the wealthy ones who are eating the "imported" Canadian dog food.

NBC reported that IAMS brand was included but went to the official recall site and IAMS was not on the list. Iams better get over to NBC and streighten this out fast.

(We use Iams but the dry kind.)

I am a little confused...we use the Special Kitty brand in 5.5 oz cans, but the recall only lists pouches. Haven't seen the pouches here. None of the numbers on the recall sheet match anything I can find on the packaging or cans we have.

Our cats aren't showing any symptoms.

Canned foods are packaged boiling hot which is why they always have a bit of a vacuum to them that you can hear being relieved when the can is pierced... The food in pouches is also cooked to the same temps but must cool some before packaging... maybe the hopper for the pouch filler was dirty or the cooling/holding tanks??

Can you tell from the info on the recall site if this particular SK (5.5 oz cans) is part of the recall?? Looks to me as though it isn't.

Another thread about the recall... perhaps those who posted the lists on the previous thread could repost them here!

It's a little confusing. I feed my cat purina fancy feast and I don't see it listed. But I'm worried it's buried under some large corporation name that I'm not familiar with.

Eukanuba is owned by Iams as well. I didn't see either on the list. I think you are safe. Most of the brands look like store brands besides the Nutro.

The recall said it was a new ingredient provided by a supplier.

Thanks for the link. This whole thing has freak me out because my 19 year old cat has already been diagnosed with cronic renal failure

It is stressful... And confusing to see that so many brands are affected (makes you think every single one of them are actually the same exact product in different packaging) We feed Nutro to both our cats and dogs, but only dry kibble, so we think we're OK.

I hope that Menu Foods, Inc isn't in the "pheasant under glass" side of pet foods.

I need to know that my Silver is safe.

I think Purina is the large corporation name so I wouldn't worry.

Took a few months to adjust to giving my cat subcutanous fluids and other meds and then to think a can of food would do her in is a little stressful.

As to the confusion, seems to be my normal state.

Happy to say, the foods she eats in not part of the recall

I don't know why but I'm always surprised when these recalls occur to discover how so many products and brands are the same except the label which is designed to appeal to various mentalities of the target consumer (sigh) ...

From an earlier post: Pet deaths prompt recall of pet food
The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said. Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738. The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Be very careful in reviewing Menu Food's recall list. I found several discrepancies in the UPCs for Hill Country Fare, which is marketed by H E B Grocery in Texas. I don't have a lot of confidence that any of the lists Menu Foods issued are complete or accurate.

Please do all the research you can to protect your pets. Neither HEB nor Walmart has yet posted anything on their websites about the recall.
