Nope, I thought scam when I heard their commercial. Well, scam is too strong a word but they are reselling what the gubermint does for free. You can write to an single address and inform the credit agencies that you do not want unauthorized public access to your info. The flood of credit card offers, etc., will cease. Only when you actually apply for credit or otherwise authorize the credit check will they gain access. No need to pay monthly for that. When I heard them touting that freebie as part of their paid service, I got suspicious.

Well I was paying nearly 800 a year for a credit reporting service, and I get the same from them for half the price.

Then again, I'm paranoid about identity theft. It's happened to people I know and it's a bitch to clear up. So, for a couple hundred a year I get peace of mind. Maybe I'm a sucker but that works for me.

A man that works with my husband, recently started getting phone calls from a credit agency that claims that he owed almost $1000 for a cell phone contract that he opened in 1998 in another state. He told them that he never lived in California and that it wasn't him. The guy on the phone, then asked him what his social securtiy number was. So, now he's investigating the credit agency.

Somebody stole my wife's social security number in college and took out loans on it. We got called by the feds to repay the loans 25 year later. I had to call our congressman to get that to go away. So I try to be real careful.

Is this the one Rush has been endorsing, or is that a different one?

... seems to be well hidden by the big three agancies. I suppose I could make it available to you for the low, low monthly price of $4.95 from my new service. Just kidding.

Interestingly enough, I just received an email about a class action suit against Equifax for their Credit Watch service (see www.hillisslacksettlement.com).

You should also be aware of your rights under the FACT Act amendments to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (see www.annualcreditreport.com). At that link, go to the FAQ page and look at "How can I exclude my name from nationwide consumer credit reporting company lists for unsolicited credit and insurance offers?". Also check out the "about us" page for more info about the big three and why they have that free web site. Note well that it is NOT the annoying freecreditreport.com site.

From what I'm reading you have to contact the credit report people every 3 months to renew the lock because that's how long until they expire.

I'm not 100% sure about this part but supposedly if you call one credit agency, they have to notify the other two.

Hope this helps.
