Mother Says Stepfather Is Responsible; Child Remains In Critical Condition

(CBS4) PLANTATION -- A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after he is beaten with a tire iron and left for dead while sleeping in his bed.

Sunrise Police were called to a house on the 2100 block of NW 107th avenue after the mother of the child alerted them and said he was beaten by his step-father.

“I’m scared,” said Lucy Housman. “ I'm very depressed. There's no words to express how I feel.”

Housman told police her son, 13-year old Orlando Lopez, was beaten with a tire iron by her husband, Erik Housman.

“You think you touch someone with your life, with your children's life and then they turn on you one day. They lose it,” said Lucy Housman.

Lopez was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery to drain a blood clot he suffered in the attack.

This was not the first sign of trouble in the Housman household. The trouble began earlier this month, when police say Erik Housman and Lucy were involved in a domestic dispute which became physical. During the argument, Erik Housman struck Lucy and her son with a crowbar.

Lopez was able to exit the house, but Housman got into his car and struck the 13-year old, before speeding away.

Lucy Housman said her husband is bipolar and began taking medication to treat the illness.

“It's been ongoing for the last seven months,” said Lucy. “We discovered he was bi polar and taking medication, and just one night he mixed it with liquor and he snapped.”

Police are searching for Housman, who already had a warrant out for his arrest for the earlier attack. He was last seen driving blue in color 2001 Ford Mustang.

If you have any information on the location of Erik Housman, please call Crimestoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

Oh, so he has an excuse. Nothing to see here, folks. The husband is sick, so there is no liability nor responsibility. I mean, bi-polar and off his medications; heck, he can do whatever he wants. < /sarcasm mode off>

I don't care if he's abused, on crack, infected with Rabies and is suffering with 3 different types of eating disorders; put this animal down. I'm sick of hearing about the "perp's" problems in life. I'm more concerned about his victims, and even more concerned about the next victim (it could easily be you, or I). There is a permanent solution to this type of problem. If this solution were to be applied, I can guarantee that he will never, ever hurt another human being again.

Well, heck, how was she to know he'd take after the kid with a tire iron?

My step daughter is bi-polar. She goes from laughing to crying in the space of 5 minutes. She is a wonderful young lady who would never mistreat anyone, animal or child.

There is no excuse for what that animal did to his stepson.

Prayers for this boy. And the hope the mother smartens up. After the 1st time this monster went after them she should have had the brains to get him out of the house. Shaking my head again here...~P~

Sometimes it isn't as easy as it would seem to get away from a maniac. I hope her son is able to recover, and that his mother has learned something.

True, I have been in an abusive relationship. but God help a man who touched my child. There would be only a 1st time for that. I will never ever understand women that stay with abusive men that hurt their children. I have seen it too many times. My parents were totally abusive toward each other when they drank. My father would beat hell out of my brother & me. I never understood why my mother stayed. Even after he beat us she would make excuses for him. I know all about abuse ....Prayers for the family and the hope they put the guy away for a long time. ~P~

My mom had some problems, probably stemming from a very difficult delivery(me}. Dad treated her like gold. I used to have to dive on my kids and take the kicks and punches from their father. I was threatened into not leaving. All the lies and broken promises, but he is acting out the threats. Too bad he's like a greased pig. The kids still at home took a vote to go to a shelter 5 yrs ago, but they were full. Finally was able to get a divorce, not that it did me much good. I just say a lot of prayers for peace, and for my health to get better.

I think the cops might actually do something for this woman and her son. I pray that that monster gets put away for a long, long time.

This is what makes me sick - the woman took her child back in that house with a man that had already hit them with a crowbar once. I think she is guilty of child abuse for doing that. She had an obligation to protect her child and because SHE wanted to stay with the man she put her child back in danger. She is just as guilty as her worthless husband. She KNEW what he was capable of and didn't protect her child.

he was out of the house. He "broke" in. He was on the run the first incident and they never issued a warrant out until it was put into the media. We haven't seen him since he hit my brother and fled. Maybe if the cops made more of an attempt to catch him, this wouldn't have happened.

He was finally caught. you can see his mugshot on sheriff.org and type in Erik Housman. Right now he is sitting there until further notice. Orlando is doing great by the way, incase anyone was wondering. No permanent damage. Hopefully Erik will get the full punishment. Let's hope BUBBA is taking "extra" care of Erik in the mean time. Trust me, we are more upset than anything. I appreciate everyone's input on the situation. I couldn't be anymore angry. I'm Orlando's older sister, Ashley. I only wish I had gotten to him sooner to catch the asshole. As soon as I heard the crying I ran. Just know that his family has not neglected Orlando. We love him more than anything. It's just horrible how they caught him after it happened. I felt like they didn't go about the case the right way. It wasn't "top priority" Anna Nicole's story is just SO much better!

I am so very sorry this has happened to your brother & family. So many stories never get the media attention they should. Your brother and family have been in my prayers & will continue to be. I hope this sick man goes to jail for a long time. Maybe some inmate justice would serve him right. I hope everything works out for your family and your brother fully recovers. ~Pandora~
