Need FReeper advice: KitchenAid Mixmaster What attachments do you NEED?

Posted on 12/11/2006 7:03:31 PM PST by Pukin Dog

Okay, here it is:

Girlfriend is a budding pastry chef, who made a subtle hint yesterday about wanting a Mixmaster. I'm thinking "thats no big deal, what the hell?" So, I go up to Amazon, and theres all these colors, and all these freakin attachments, and DAMN that thing is expensive!! I thought I was going to get away cheap on this deal, ya know?

So, you owners of these things, what is so great about them anyway, and what attachments should I buy with the thing, and what freaking COLOR and, and, and, by the time I'm ready to buy, should I just give her the cash?

Why is this thing so much more expensive then the other brands? Does food taste better with this thing? Is this some female status symbol or something? I could buy a lot of man stuff with that money, so ladies, tell me what's so great about this sucker, before I get her a gift certificate instead!

The most important attachment is a strong man to lift the damn thing up when you need it! No kidding. I can barely lift mine it is so heavy.

Hint #1: a Mixmaster is gonna cost ya.

Hint #2: pastry chefs are insane. (There's a reason all pastry chefs are girls.) Run. Do not walk. Do not let her know where you sleep or park your car.

It has horsepower. That should appeal to a guy. This is one of the few mixers which will whip up Royal Icing--and it has a cool way of rotating. What does "Huscvarna" mean to you?

If your girlfriend is a cake decorator, you might consider and upgrade to the bigger KitchenAid model, but I've had both and prefer the smaller.

I don't really care for most of the attachments. I have a food processor that handles many of the functions they advertise. Grinding meat? Well, do you hunt deer? Might be nice to have that one. Unless there is a specific function, I'd steer clear of the attachments. Unless you think they're cool?

What is VERY NICE to have is an extra mixing bowl! Especially for a person who bakes, this means she doesn't have to stop and wash the bowl and can really cook.

I was going to recommend the Kenmore mixer I got the kids a couple of years ago, but they are no longer making it. It used all of the Kitchen-aid attachments.

I would get the pasta maker. And this: http://www.kitchenaid.com/catalog/product.jsp?src=Stand+Mixer+Accessories&cat=158&prod=605

Personally I would just love a new vita-mix. It does so many different things.

Good grief - DON'T give her the cash. As for the colors, what color does she have for dishes and the rest of her cookware?

This could go well for you. The cookbook has a simple recipe for bread that is delicious. Insist that you get some payback.

Don't get her a MixMaster. If you really really love her you'll buy her a KitchenAid.

It's the best one on the market and is literally made of cast iron.

They're also American made and guaranteed to be of the first quality.

Attachments for a pastry chef?

A dough hook is a must.

So is a wire wisk.

The pasta attachment is a nice touch as it can be used for more than just pasta.

But what you really, really need is the grinder attachment.

For the record I have no financial association with KitchenAid other than as an extremely satisfied customer. We've owned ours for over 15 years and have never, ever had a problem with it.

The darn things are just about indestructible.

The standard model comes with whip, bread paddle and batter paddle. I've gone through two Kitchenaids.

Whoops. My mistake. You said MixMaster but posted a picture of the KitchenAid.

If that's the one she wants, take the hit, bro.

Yeah, she is a little bit nuts, but it comes with benefits.
