Jill Tarter favors her flying-saucer/Martian salt-and-pepper set. But don't mistake her for one of those kookie types who live in desert trailers prepping for the aliens to arrive.
Tarter, with a Ph.D. in astronomy, is director of the Center for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Research, a northern California group of some 120 scientists and technicians who are listening for signs from outer space.
