Evolution, not just gluttony, led to obesity pandemic

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Evolution and the environment, not just gluttony, has led to a global obesity pandemic, with an estimated 1.5 billion people overweight -- more than the number of undernourished people -- an obesity conference was told on Monday.

The mounting epidemic of obesity in children would see many die before their parents, said Kate Steinbeck, co-chair of the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney.

"This is the first generation in history where children may die before their parents," Steinbeck told the conference.

Health experts at the week-long congress starting on Monday said calls for the past 30 years for people to eat less fatty foods and exercise more had failed to combat global obesity....

..."We know this is not about gluttony -- it is the interaction of heredity and environment," said Steinbeck

Global obesity (which is at temporary problem in all likelihood) is preferable to this ...

Just my opinion of course.

Thanks, but I don't think this is for the science crowd.

Nothing that includes the words "obesity pandemic" makes sense.

I think the 6 1/2 oz bottle of Coke evolving into the 44 oz Thirstmaster had something to do with it.

People can eat too much, so some of them do.

What is the problem, again?

Why are we not all cheering that the horn of plenty is full?

CATASTROPHE must be the label for any news item. SUCCESS is a bad word.

"We know this is not about gluttony -- it is the interaction of heredity and environment," said Steinbeck.

Heredity and environment forced them to drink that 44 oz. of high-fructose corn syrup.

Research into obesity should be given top priority to have any hope of combating the global pandemic," said Arne Vernon, president of the association.

Translation: Send earmarked taxpayer's money for another doomsday special interest group of con persons I mean science researchers to live large on my dime.

On a lighter note: The World Congress on Obesity will meet the World congress on Hunger and Starvation on the green in front of Malthus Hall for a Fribee match.

Amazingly enough, about 30 years ago, high fructose corn syrup (genetically manipulated and in EVERYTHING at the grocery store, even the 'healthy' stuff) started being added to foods and drinks--causes weight gain, raises your cholesterol, causes a multitude of other health problems--and about 30 years ago, America started having problems with obesity...hmmmmmmmmm. Let me think about that for a few minutes.

it makes perfect sense.

How so?

Most people rarely engage in physical labor, as opposed to one hundred years ago.

Add to that the fact that people don't cook healthy food anymore, either, and prefer to eat out.

The world is fat because people move less and consume more.

This has more potential than global warming! What will our brilliant politicians do to respond to this crisis? Organize the Million Fat-Man March? Mothers against Blubber? War on Gluttony? Create a new cabinet post, headed by a Secretary of Obesity? Give a tax credit for going on a diet?

Take more of your money and redistribute it to fat people so that they can have free fruit, which they won't eat, and medical treatment, which they won't use.

People are lazy. And we'll end up being soaked for it.

I can see an evolutionary reason to overeat.....Wolves and Lions gorge themselves till they cant eat anymore....if they dont eat it the wolf next to them will....survival of the fittest (or fattest if you will)....they sleep it off for a day then they are back on the trail.

I personally dont know anyone who eats out on a regular basis. My family only likes home cooked food....

as far as physcial labor, I know plenty of hard working people in the construction industry....some of them are severly overweight.....
