New iPods, iMac due September 12

Apple will take advantage of a September 12 media event to introduce the second-generation iPod nano, an updated 5G iPod, and upgraded iMacs, sources tell Think Secret.

Additional members of the media are slated to received invitations to the event this week, tipsters say, following the notification received by select European media outlets last week.

The event will be held near Apple's Cupterino, Calif. headquarters and will be carried by a private satellite feed to a central London location for members of the European press. While Apple will not be taking advantage of Apple Expo Paris—which also kicks off September 12—as a venue to introduce the new products, the new devices are said to be scheduled to be on display at that show.

The event will see the introduction of the second-generation iPod nano and upgraded 5G iPod. As reported by Think Secret in July, the new nano will sport increased capacities and be available in multiple colors with a metal finish. The upgraded iPod, meanwhile, is expected to sport increased capacities at the same price points.

The new iPod will not be the long-awaited touch-screen iPod, which is currently tracking for an early 2007 release. Sources have noted, however, that there remains a small possibility that the revolutionary new iPod could arrive in time for the holidays, as Apple executives are eager to steal whatever thunder Microsoft's Zune player will receive when it launches in the fourth quarter.

Apple is also expected to unveil its movie store initiative in September, prompting speculation that the announcement will be delivered at the Sept. 12 event. Both iPod and movie announcements were originally scheduled for August but had been postponed for unknown reasons.

New iMac

The September 12 event will also include the introduction of an upgraded iMac. As noted previously, the line is slated to receive faster Core 2 Duo processors and will also see the addition of a new, high-end 23-inch model.

Also rumored, but not confirmed, is that Apple will be introducing a VESA-compliant mounting kit or its own wall-mount for the new iMacs. Apple has not offered such an accessory since the original (pre-iSight) iMac G5.

Hope it's true. I'm in the market for a new desktop and I'm waiting for the IMacs to be refreshed.

This is no exaggeration: The iPod is the greatest consumer product in the history of human civilization.

I had the iPod on the beach this morning listening to Bob Dylan's new album and some podcasts of Coverville and Geek News Central.

I then had two quarts of steamed clams dipped in drawn butter and I drank the broth aftewards. But that does not take away from the fact that the iPod is the greatest consumer product in the history of human civilization.

Hmmm...the telephone, the automobile, the computer, the camera, and about a dozen other consumer products are probably among the greatest in human history. The iPod is way cool, but has not changed history and more than, say, the Walkman?

At any rate, I'm fired up about the 5th Gen iPod! Can't wait to see it.

I love my big, antique ipod.
A while back, Swordmaker gave me a link where I bought a replacement battery for $8.

Perhaps this explains why a friend's iMac purchase of a couple weeks ago won't be shipped until 9/20.

Apple needs to design an iMac for ADULTS! In looks, I mean. I can see their appeal to young people and college students, but I need a G5 tower look or even the grey plastic metallic look of the cinema displays.

The Etch-a-Sketch look ain't cutting it.
