as I stood in the Apple store last weekend and drooled over the beautiful, beautiful hardware, all I could think was how much work it would take to twiddle with the default settings, install third-party software, and hide all the commercial tie-ins so I could pretend I was in control of my own computer.

He needs to learn how to backup his data though...............
BUMP!
And lots of other good information I had not seen elseware (not a computer geek).
I plan to check out VLC tonight...
Maybe guys like the author aren't happy unless they're bitching about stuff. Which is probably why they don't have a life outside their computers...
Why do professional athletes continue to have all these "hideous" injuries? Yeah, I suppose they push thier bodies a lot harder than I do, but then, having a life outside of sports will to that to a guy.
One's choice of profession necessitates different problems and issues. Their "hideous unrecoverable computer problems" cause them to fix those issues (or cause others to fix them), thus helping you by creating better software in the future. What you are seeing is the process itself of the improvement. Bethankful these guys are experiencing these issues and publicizing them--if they were'nt, we'd still be using DOS 3.3.
A few months ago in Austin, I monopolized an entire table of friendly coworker bar banter with a rant about Apples lock-in.
Give me that man's address ... he'd be a big hit at parties.....
I note that his article -- and the various links -- are a series of bitches and complaints about other people's software. The guy's got himself a religion.
LOL! I know. I purposely try not to talk shop in social situations.
The guy's got himself a religion.
Only if this isn't his job. If his occupation is not computers, then yes--I agree with you. Otherwise, I think he just enjoys "talking shop" with people who couldn't care less.
The very definition of boor.
Whether it's his job or not, the first paragraph of his article reads exactly like something written by a fellow who's getting ready to form a breakaway church. His primary complaint appears to be that Apple has departed from orthodoxy.
Why are you manufacturing another bogus headline? The author never says he is switching to Linux.
Macs are perfectly capable of running open source software without Linux. Just compile the source code and go.
The only mac user in my family found out about VLC about 6 months ago when I wanted to show them a clip of what XGL is about.
They've been using VLC consistently ever since.
It's good stuff.
Good question.
I had another link I was gonna post but didn't
