Ann Coulter's Psychological Profile?
My Brain | today | Al Simmons

Posted on 06/18/2006 2:24:55 AM PDT by Al Simmons

OK gang. Time to put the old iconoclastic part of the old thinker to work.

Yeah, I have enjoyed Ann's acidic barbs and laughed out loud at some of her more outrageous pronouncements over the years - though frankly, her act is getting a bit old with me - but that is not what this vanity is about.

I suspect that we are all secretly aware that her public persona displays more than a little evidence of exhibitionism and narcissism....the woman clearly has some personality issues. I personally think that she likely has a low sense of self-worth, which her public persona would appear to compensate for....

I would like to hear opinions on this topic from any FReepers who are psychologists or psychiatrists.

Oh, and in case some of you didn't get it, I'll repeat myself:

THIS VANITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MS. COULTER'S POLITICAL VIEWS. It is meant to provoke some thought about her method of promoting them (and herself).

I suspect that few Freepers would want their daughters to behave as Ms. Coulter does - both in terms of her outrageous rudeness and her never-married lifestyle.

"So if your daughter publicly wished that someone put rat poison into a Supreme Court Justice's coffee that would be OK with you?" Did she say that? Somehow, that comment didn't generate enough outrage to get my attention. Interesting. I do recall that Rush Limbaugh was outraged when Julianne Malveaux openly wished that Clarence Thomas's wife would feed him lots of heart-attack inducing foods.

I don't think Ann is in a position to do any wrong. All she does is give her take on what she sees and she comments on them.

If you don't get or like what she says, then don't read her or buy the books.

I myself back the President on the eventual Justices he picked, he is prosecuting the war well and he did good on the tax cuts.

I don't like the social spending and think he is out of his mind regarding illegal immigration up to this point as I have expressed on other threads before.

I still don't understand how President Bush's nomination of Miers warranted such frenzied reactions here. I'm trying to avoid the whole psycho-analysis thing, but something Ann said at the time did make me think it was "all about Ann". She said something like "I'm not even qualified to be on the Supreme Court and I have all these credentials........"

I didn't have any personal investment in Miers, but I thought she was treated badly. What really astonishes me is how these self-proclaimed keepers of the right continually invoke Reagan, while blasting Bush, when Reagan did many of the same things Bush does. Reagan gave us Sandra Day O'Connor. Michael Medved made a great argument showing how it was the SC Justices w/o a judicial track record who tend to be more conservative.

Amen! I made a similar point on another thread. Someone asked me if what Ann said was meaner than what the Jersey Girls have said. I responded saying I tell my kids, "He did it first." is not a justification. Why should I expect less from an Ivy League-educated adult than I do from my 9-year-old?

A cultist follows at least that leader, that does not describe me.

As a matter of fact, the whole reason I said Ann isn't really in a position to do any wrong is that she is in no position of power at all, she is an entertainer.

If she makes any statement, that is her words and I would guess you take or leave what you want.
Sometimes you have to take the humor, or exaggeration that she (like Rush) also uses as a tool for what it is, a devise made to make you think about what she said.

I hear context is good also by the way! :-)

I didn't follow much of the postings here during the Miers nomination, but I have seen first-hand the blind loyalty to Coulter at Free Republic. What I don't understand is, why is it acceptable to critcize Bush on these threads, but we can't criticize Coulter? It would seem to me that, if open dialogue about the president is good for conservatism, the same should apply to Coulter.

Oooopssss! This is the quote to which I was responding:

Because Ann happens to have similar beliefs to yours, and is very effective at communicating them, you refuse to apply to her the same standard that you would apply to your own daughter in a heartbeat - "be polite, don't wish ill on others".

For the record, I was not saying "Amen" to rat poison!

I criticized the heck out of Ann's statements in that moment in time here on FR because I had trust in the President and figured if he made this nomination, he must know what he is doing.

I thought it was risky to have all this divisiveness within the conservative circles at that time.

I am glad for the outcome though, because the more I heard about Myers, the more I didn't get the reason for the nomination. I didn't think that was a fight worth having at that time. I think those wanting Myers out before I did were right and I was wrong for a while. I started out on the wrong side of that issue.

The difference is Rush will often say he is illustrating absurdity by being absurd. I noticed Rush started off in the early years a little harsh -- mixing up a picture of Chelsea with a dog, for example. But he has toned it down a bit and he will generally apologize when he knows he was in the wrong. Ann makes a lot of witty exaggerations and I agree that context is important. But Ann made no such clarifications vis a vis her comments about the Jersey Girls. She was unapologetic and made it very clear she meant what she said and said what she meant.

What clarification would there need to be made regarding the Jersey girls?
They are IMO like Tokyo Rose. I really like many here do believe they did things that got at least some American soldiers dead. Why would they deserve some pass instead of a continual kick in the rear?

By the way, Rush Limbaugh...CALLER ABORTIONS!

OK, so I'll put you down in the "we have permission to criticize Ann" column. Good to know!

As for Miers, we will never know if she was the wrong nominee or not because she never got a chance to be heard before the Senate. Clearly, my fears that this would make it harder for the next nominee to get through the process were unfounded and I am relieved about that.

I'd be proud if had a daughter that turned out like Ann. Tell the truth and damn the consequences, and cute to boot

There is a LONG way to go between giving the Jersey girls "a pass" and making personal attacks on them. If she was "just exaggerating" about the Jersey girls, she had plenty of opportunity to say so. But she didn't. She stood by her words.

I don't have a problem with Rush's caller abortions. He was clearly illustrating a point -- that wasn't a personal attack on anyone. Yes, I know he has done plenty of personal attacks in the past but, as I've noted, he doesn't do that much any more.

The whole point regarding the Jersey girls is that they went from sympathetic widows to activists that benefited terrorism and probably got American soldiers killed, so FLAME ON with all the personal attacks on them IMO. They earned the return attack IMO from all the work they did for radical Islam.

That daughter could then buy you quite a nice house for your old age, though she may or may not give you grandchildren.
