Student Suspended Over Chewing Gum (Pittsburgh)

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. -- A Lower Burrell school student is facing a three-day suspension for sharing gum with a classmate.

Jolt chewing gum has caffeine and ginseng.

The Lower Burrell school superintendent said consuming and passing out the gum violates the school's drug awareness policy. That's because caffeine is considered a stimulant.

Parents told Channel 11 they did not understand the suspension.

Resident Elizabeth Grombacher said, "I think it's stupid. Everything's getting too politically correct it's so wrong."

"It's probably just like Mountain Dew or something like that. If it's got a lot of caffeine in it and they probably sell the pop at school,” parent Nita Serene said.

Jolt chewing gum is sold over the counter at drug stores and vitamin distributors.

According to Jolt's website, each piece of gum has as about as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee.

Seems pretty harmless, although it is interesting that they sell the gum in 100-pack "trial sizes."

The theory is that the coffe will calm hyperactivity. I know it seems counterintuitive. something about a kids body chemistry.
But I think they have to be hyper first or it doesn't work as a sedative...it works like it does in everyone else.

Meanwhile the kids were lining up in the nurse's office to get their fix of Mountain Dew.

(For those of you who haven't had a child in school for a while, yes...they do that with a doctor's order.)

That has always baffled me. I find that even one strong cup of coffee in the morning makes me jittery.

Strange isn't it. But stimulants have the opposite effect on some of these kids. It sure beats going the drug route.

That old paradoxical effect--I know first hand.

Caffiene makes the difference between:

startstop,starttstop,startstop,startstop,startstop,
startstop,startstop,startstop,startstop

and

Focus, plan, start, concentrate, finish

(I get my caffiene from Diet Cokes)

Hmmm .... that is bizarre.

Seems like if one would get enough of that stuff you could turn into The Unibomber .......... or Al Gore (without the Häagen-Dazs).

If it has no effect on you why do you drink it?

It must be difficult being a humour challenged standup comedian.

I actually was going to agree with the school at first sight especially if they have a rule for no chewing gum, but then when I read that article, it is a ridiculous reason and actually should be put in our "Joke article of the day." In fact, I think we should start one of those. During the day we read articles and then the following day the moderator puts it in the "Joke of the Day" file. That would be interesting.

I remember back in the 70s/80s, a number of companies started producing legal, caffeine-based "knockoffs" of popular amphetamines (Black Beauties, etc.). The imitators weren't nearly as strong (or addictive) as actual speed, of course, but a lot of kids took them for a cheap rush. I'm sort of wondering if the 100 pack option is catering to that niche.
