What propels rape stories to wide attention? (Double standard)
Richmond Times-Dispatch ^ | May 14, 2006 | Mark Holmberg

It's always interesting to see which story blows up in the national news and races across the land like a prairie fire.

No, this isn't about Elliott Yamin.

We're talking about the Duke University rape saga, which has become the latest reality crime drama to spontaneously combust in our collective consciousness.

Two rich white boys, members of the Duke lacrosse team, were indicted in the alleged rape of a black stripper at a party March 13.

It's a Molotov cocktail of race, class, sex, sports, booze and politics.

New developments in the Duke rape scandal!

We're tantalized with a flood of evidence, innuendo and plain ol' gossip from breathless cable news personalities with pursed lips and hoisted eyebrows.

Famous and screwing around.

Black complaining about white.

The team or military and anyone.

I think those are the three that make the press most.

Yes, I noticed that the claim of Juanita Broaddrick didn't get nearly the objective analysis that some claims receive.

This has nothing to do with rape. Rich white boys + poor black stripper

"It's a Molotov cocktail of race, class, sex, sports, booze and politics."

That's the answer. Also the release of new steamy facts are stretched out over days (like the Peterson case) giving something "new" to talk about, curious legal issues for the Fox lawyers to opine about, player sending email about killing strippers added to the mix.

Sean Hannity is guilty of this very thing.

It's not race. It's all about sex and the opportunity to talk about it twenty four seven on the airwaves. Getting to say, semen, penis, etc. without raising an eyebrow.

I agree. Almost every night Duke lacrosse is the lead story on Hannity & Colmes. Considering all the problems in the world, Iran, Illegal immigration, the War on Terror, etc. - the Duke lacrosse case is hardly the lead story.

I listen to the first 30 seconds of H&C. If they mention Duke lacrosse, I switch channels.

You expect Greta to chase ambulances, but ....

While the subject of out-of-control prosecutors and prosecutorial misconduct is in the news, is anybody trying to do anything for Frank Fuster??

Oh really? Then why haven't we heard a PEEP from the media about the similar case cited by this column, in which everything seems the same except for two factors: 1) the victim wasn't a stripper, and 2) THE RACES ARE REVERSED.

I'm just giving my opinion. Ask the media. Not me.

While there does appear to be a double standard re:race, part of the difference is the fact that Duke is much more well known in the academic and athletic scene than the University of Richmond. Nevertheless, the media has hardly said anything about the rape allegation against Navy's quarterback, who is black. I believe the accuser is white.

I'd like to see this silly notion of "we won't print the victim's name" go by the wayside, really. This practice of the MSM creates the appearance of guilt on the accused's head just by doing it, sicne they plaster their names and faces all over the place.

I think if a woman goes into a party or guys and strips....her name deserves to be printed....NOW....if a bunch of guys bust into a tupperware party and rape....then, it's another story....Maybe I'm just old fashioned.....

It's a Molotov cocktail of race, class, sex, sports, booze and politics.

That's because an opportunistic politician up for election used the case to pander to race hustlers and feminists. Nifong was the one who took it public. Such mischief against innocent young citizens is a disgrace, even if they are privileged white male athletes.
